About Woods Recruiting: Empowering Student-Athletes Since 1989
Woods Recruiting is an independent scouting and grassroots sports media platform dedicated to providing high school student-athletes with free scouting reports, increased visibility, and valuable recruiting information.
We are not a paid college recruiting service. We do not charge student-athletes or families for scouting reports, athlete exposure, or coverage on Woods Recruiting.
Our mission is simple: identify talented student-athletes, evaluate their abilities, tell their stories, and create content that helps bring greater attention to deserving prospects.
Woods Recruiting believes talented student-athletes should have an opportunity to be seen regardless of their financial situation, geographic location, school size, recruiting status, or current level of exposure.
Our Journey: Where It All Began
Woods Recruiting was founded in August 1989 with an original focus on basketball student-athletes.
Over the years, our work expanded as we recognized a problem that continues to exist today: talented high school athletes can easily be overlooked.
Our founder and president, Al Woods, brings decades of basketball, scouting, and recruiting experience to Woods Recruiting.
Growing up in Virginia Beach, Virginia, Al developed his basketball skills on outdoor courts before eventually playing college basketball at West Virginia State College in 1983 and later professionally in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Those experiences gave him a firsthand understanding of the challenges athletes encounter while attempting to advance from high school athletics to the college level.
That understanding eventually became the foundation for Woods Recruiting.
While Woods Recruiting has evolved considerably since 1989, one principle remains unchanged:
Talented student-athletes deserve opportunities to be recognized.
What Is Woods Recruiting Today?

Our scouting reports and athlete coverage are designed to provide additional visibility while creating useful information for college coaches, high school coaches, club coaches, student-athletes, parents, and basketball fans.
Our Scouting Reports Are Free
This is one of the most important principles behind the modern Woods Recruiting.
Student-athletes and families are not charged for Woods Recruiting scouting reports.
There is no scouting-report fee required for an athlete to be evaluated or featured.
We believe our credibility depends on providing independent evaluations rather than determining coverage based on an athlete's ability to pay.
Our objective is to discover prospects, evaluate their abilities, highlight their accomplishments, and provide another source of exposure for athletes who deserve attention.
Being featured by Woods Recruiting does not guarantee a scholarship, roster position, college offer, or recruitment by any particular program.
College coaches ultimately make their own recruiting decisions.
Our responsibility is to provide quality scouting content and help deserving student-athletes become more visible.
What Makes Woods Recruiting Different?
Decades of Experience
Woods Recruiting has roots dating back to 1989. That history provides decades of perspective on high school athletics, college recruiting, scouting, and the constantly changing recruiting landscape.
Independent Athlete Coverage
Our scouting evaluations are based on our assessment of the student-athlete and available information—not on whether the athlete or family purchased a recruiting package.
Free Scouting Reports
Woods Recruiting does not charge student-athletes or families for scouting reports or athlete features.
Grassroots Perspective
We believe tremendous talent exists beyond nationally ranked prospects and heavily recruited athletes.
There are deserving student-athletes competing at high schools, AAU programs, club programs, showcases, tournaments, and communities throughout the country who simply need more people to know their names.
College Coach Visibility
Our content is created to be informative and useful to the broader basketball and recruiting community, including college coaches searching for prospects.
Long-Term Digital Exposure
A Woods Recruiting scouting report creates an online resource that athletes can share with coaches, teammates, family members, and their communities while building their digital presence.
The Reality of College Recruiting
College recruiting has never been simple.
Today's student-athletes face an increasingly complicated environment involving the transfer portal, changing NCAA rules, additional eligibility considerations, increased competition for roster positions, social media, recruiting databases, showcases, camps, AAU competition, and thousands of other athletes pursuing similar opportunities.
Talent alone does not guarantee recruitment.
Student-athletes must continue developing academically, athletically, mentally, and personally.
They should understand that college coaches evaluate much more than points, rebounds, assists, home runs, touchdowns, statistics, rankings, or highlight videos.
Academics, character, work ethic, communication, attitude, coachability, competitiveness, consistency, and potential can all matter.
Woods Recruiting uses its platform to educate athletes and families about these realities while providing additional exposure through independent scouting coverage.
Our Mission: Exposure + Information + Opportunity
College coaches cannot evaluate athletes they don't know exist.
That's why Woods Recruiting works to bring attention to deserving prospects through:
-
Detailed scouting reports
-
Player profiles
-
Prospect watchlists
-
Recruiting articles
-
Grassroots basketball coverage
-
Player evaluations
-
Recruiting education
-
Digital content
-
Social media promotion
-
Email distribution and online visibility
Our objective isn't to promise scholarships.
Our objective is to create visibility.
We want more college coaches, basketball professionals, high school coaches, AAU coaches, families, athletes, and basketball fans discovering talented student-athletes through Woods Recruiting.
Our History and Growth
Woods Recruiting's history stretches back more than three decades.
From 1989 through 1995, Woods Recruiting operated without fees while developing its reputation and network.
The organization continued evolving throughout the following decades. Between 2013 and 2017, Woods Recruiting trained and managed a network of 26 scouts across multiple sports, expanding its reach and scouting experience.
After stepping away in 2017, Al Woods returned to Woods Recruiting in 2024 with a different vision for the future.
Instead of rebuilding Woods Recruiting around selling recruiting services to families, the focus shifted toward scouting reports, independent media coverage, recruiting information, digital exposure, and grassroots sports content.
Since returning, Woods Recruiting has published more than 1,800 scouting reports, and that number continues to grow.
The goal now is much larger.
We want Woods Recruiting to become one of the most comprehensive independent scouting and grassroots sports media platforms in the country.
Building a National Scouting Platform
Woods Recruiting believes thousands of deserving student-athletes remain underexposed every year.
Some compete for nationally recognized programs.
Others attend small high schools.
Some play for major AAU organizations.
Others compete for independent club programs.
Some already have scholarship offers.
Others are still waiting for their first college coach to discover them.
They all deserve an opportunity to be evaluated.
Our long-term goal is to build an extensive digital library of student-athlete scouting reports and recruiting content that college coaches and the basketball community can access.
Every scouting report becomes another opportunity for an athlete's name, accomplishments, academic achievements, basketball abilities, and potential to be discovered.
Looking Ahead
The recruiting landscape will continue changing.
The transfer portal, NIL, roster limits, eligibility rules, increased player movement, international recruiting, and other developments will continue affecting high school athletes pursuing college opportunities.
Woods Recruiting will continue studying these changes, discussing their impact, educating our audience, and covering student-athletes.
Our focus remains on independent scouting, grassroots sports coverage, recruiting education, and athlete exposure.
We believe every level of college athletics matters.
NCAA Division I, Division II, Division III, NAIA, junior college, and other collegiate opportunities can provide student-athletes with the chance to continue competing while pursuing an education.
Finding the appropriate opportunity matters more than chasing a label.
Our Commitment to Student-Athletes
Woods Recruiting will continue working to identify and highlight deserving prospects.
We will continue writing scouting reports.
We will continue telling athlete stories.
We will continue covering grassroots basketball.
We will continue providing recruiting information.
We will continue building relationships throughout the basketball community.
And most importantly:
Woods Recruiting scouting reports and athlete coverage remain free to student-athletes and families.
No athlete should believe they have to purchase a scouting report from Woods Recruiting to receive consideration for coverage.
Final Thoughts
Sports can create opportunities that extend far beyond competition.
They can provide education, relationships, discipline, personal development, unforgettable experiences, and opportunities that can influence an athlete for the rest of their life.
Woods Recruiting wants deserving student-athletes to receive greater recognition for the work they put into their sport.
We scout.
We evaluate.
We write.
We publish.
We promote.
We educate.
And we do it without charging student-athletes or families for Woods Recruiting scouting reports and athlete coverage.
Woods Recruiting — Independent Scouting. Grassroots Coverage. Athlete Exposure. Since 1989.
