How To Get Fernando Torres Back In Form

Roy Hodgson finally saw his Liverpool side climb out of the bottom three with a hard-fought win at Bolton. It certainly wasn’t easy for the Hodgson’s men as the hosts frustrated Liverpool for long periods only to be undone by some Fernando Torres magic late on.

Torres’ delightful flick in to the path of an on-running Maxi Rodriguez demonstrated that while he is still lacking in form he can still be a match winner for Hodgson. In fact you could argue that with his assist today, coupled with a winning goal against Blackburn last week, the Spaniard has already earned Liverpool six points.

However the former Atletico Madrid man is still a million miles away from his best. Had it not been for his piece of individual brilliance, then mass criticism of Torres would have been the reaction from most pundits.

So often at the Reebok Stadium, the 27-year-old would miss place a pass or see his touch let him down. This is the reason why he is not getting anywhere near the number of goals that you would expect from a striker of his ability.

I’m reluctant to say “the Fernando Torres of old would have scored today” because it’s not as if Torres is a different player. His flick today was a timely reminder of the immense talent that he possesses.

In time, I think Torres will play himself in to form because his confidence will slowly grow. But I think Hodgson can help him by changing his tactics to ensure Torres gets the best service possible. Torres looked isolated at times in the first half against Bolton, and with his confidence low, a second striker to support him and ease the pressure on him to score goals could really help the striker return to his best sooner.

Hodgson did just that at Bolton with the introduction of David N’Gog as a second half substitute and Torres’ performance did improve as a result. In the long term I doubt whether N’Gog has the capabilities to provide a suitable foil for Torres, but with Dirk Kuyt’s return from injury expected in next week’s clash with Chelsea, Hodgson does have options.

The Chelsea game next week could be the ideal stage for ‘El Nino’ to return to form. The striker has previously thrived for Liverpool on the big stage, and there aren’t many bigger games for Liverpool this season. But you have to feel for Torres to shine he really needs the support of his team-mates and his manager now.

Hodgson would be a fool not to give him this support, because if he can get Torres firing on all cylinders, then Torres will fire Liverpool up the table.

Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina Ready to Quit Liverpool In January

June 18, 2010 - Potchefstroom, South Africa - epa02209826 Spanish goalkeeper Pepe Reina (L) chats with Spanish forward Fernando Torres during their team's training session in Potchesfstroom, South Africa, 18 June 2010. Spain will face Honduras on 21 June at the Ellis Park stadium in Johannesburg in a Group H match at the South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup.

For those readers expecting to read a juicy story about why Torres and Reina are ready to quit Liverpool in January, I apologize.

You see, The Daily Mirror published a story about it last night. Whether it’s true or not, we’ll have to wait and see, but I’m sure it gave the Mirror the traffic it wanted despite there being no sources named in the article. Essentially the story claims that both Torres and Reina have escape clauses in their contracts and they both plan on telling the Liverpool management that they plan on exercising those clauses in January to move to bigger clubs. Yesterday The Mirror reported that Reina was a target for Manchester United.

It’s often hard to know how truthful these stories are. Is it conceivable? Sure. Will the Liverpool owners or manager refute the claims this week and vehemently deny that the clauses exist? We’ll have to wait and see.

One resource to put The Daily Mirror’s story into perspective is the Football Transfer League website which monitors the accuracy of transfer stories mentioned in British newspapers. In the defense of the newspapers, a story may be accurate but then a player, agent or club may change his mind which would make the story null and void. But it at least gives us a good insight of how newspapers rank against each other. For example, The Daily Mirror has a 16.2% accuracy when writing about Liverpool transfers and how often they come true.

Out of the 14 British newspapers that are tracked, The Daily Mirror is ranked fourth from bottom when the accuracy of their transfer rumors are measured. In addition to that, The Daily Mirror is ranked number three for the most number of transfer rumors published each day. The paper publishes an average of 3.05 per day since the summer 2006 transfer window.

So based on The Daily Mirror’s track record, I wouldn’t put too much faith in their story about Torres and Reina being accurate. In fact, it makes you wonder what the point of The Mirror is especially when you realize that the vast majority of articles they publish are regarding transfer rumors. Take those away and you’re not left with much else. Of the top 10 most read stories on their site right now, nine of them are transfer-related. The Mirror obviously realizes that as much as we, the public, dislike being sold down the river, we eat up transfer speculation. So as long as we continue clicking on those type of stories, they’ll continue focusing their efforts on writing them because it generates ad revenue and sells papers.

Liverpool have new owners – what they need now is Torres back to his best

SOCCER-ENGLAND/LIVERPOOL-SALEBuying Liverpool may prove the easy part for new owners who will be expected to spend freely to rescue the five times European champions from their worst start to a season in more than 50 years.

What John W Henry really needs is for Fernando Torres to recapture the form that made him the most feared striker in the Premier League.

While he, Roy Hodgson and the Liverpool fans wait for developments on the pitch, here are some of the other known unknowns around the club:

Q – Is manager Roy Hodgson’s job safe?

A – The vastly experienced Englishman was recruited as a safe pair of hands in the wake of Rafael Benitez’s departure but so far there is no sign of a new dawn at Anfield. Hodgson cannot take the blame for that though.

Most new managers at a major club would demand a war chest to start re-building but Hodgson was restricted by the off-field problems during the pre-season transfer window.

Henry, given the credit for rebuilding the Red Sox, will know that an instant turnaround is unlikely and will be under pressure to provide transfer funds. Chairman Martin Broughton was responsible for bringing Hodgson to Anfield and he has the board’s backing but Henry will want to see a big improvement in the next two months.

Q – Will NESV wipe out all Liverpool’s debts?

A – On completion of the takeover on Friday, NESV confirmed all the debt loaded on the club by the previous owners had been wiped out. That will immediately save the club an estimated 25-30 million pounds a year in interest payments which have meant it has existed in a financial straitjacket.

So far, however, it is unclear exactly how much Henry will be pumping into the club from his own fortune.

Q – Will Henry invest heavily in players?

A – The fans’ main gripe is that most of the their hard-earned ticket money has simply been servicing the loans Gillett and Hicks took out to buy the club.

Now they will hope to see investment in players but it will not be straightforward.

Henry has yet to talk figures on what Hodgson can expect and there is also a huge difference between the way players are bought and sold in American baseball and the English Premier League. Henry will soon find out Liverpool’s name alone will not entice players to Anfield and big sums will be required.

However, he vowed to make money available for transfers and Liverpool fans will be watching closely when the window opens.

Keeping Spain striker Fernando Torres happy will be key to his chances of ingratiating himself with the fans.

 Q – New stadium or re-vamped Anfield?

A – Anfield’s 45,000 capacity means their matchday revenue is not in the same league as Manchester United or Arsenal and the famous old stadium has certainly seen better days. The credit crunch put Liverpool’s proposed stadium in Stanley Park on ice but just because they now have a new owner and fresh financial start, it is not guaranteed that Henry will opt for moving away from Anfield.

Henry said on Friday after announcing the deal was complete: “It’s too early to say what will happen on the stadium front.”

His success with the Red Sox involved a 10-year renovation project of the Fenway Stadium — turning an outdated building into one that will compete with the best for another 20 years.

Q – Will the Liverpool fans trust him?

A – Liverpool fans painted Hicks and Gillett as pariahs, blaming the Americans for just about everything to go wrong at Liverpool. While there is clear relief that they are now gone, there will be nagging worries about whether they have swapped two American opportunists with another one.

However, he ended 80 years of under-achievement at the Red Sox and made them the second most-valuable baseball team in the U.S. worth $ 840 million.

If he can help end Liverpool’s 20-year wait for a league title he would be given the keys to the city.
