Wilmer Flores talks about his defense, 2011, and more..

Posted in VWL,Wilmer Flores

Overall, Mets prospects have not fared well this Fall/Winter.  One of the few bright spots has been the stellar play of Wilmer Flores.  Flores had an early season calf injury that sidelined him for about 6 weeks, but has mashed his way to a line of .369/.397/.538 in 21 games for Los Bravos de Margarita of the VWL.  He also has driven in 15 runs while drawing 5 walks and striking out 9 times in 65 AB.

In an article (Spanish), by Leonard Ojeda, on the Bravos website, Flores talks about his returning from injury, his defense, and his personal outlook for 2011.

Flores on returning from his injury:

At first I was a little nervous, which I think is natural.  Since returning, I have been pretty happy with the results.

Flores talking about his defense:

“I still do not have full trust in my glove.  They (Mets) sent me to develop defensively.  They want me to work on my footwork because naturally I am slower than other shortstops.  But that does not stop me from playing shortstop.  I feel I am mentally more mature now.”

Finally, Flores talks about his 2011 in the Mets organization:

“The Mets are supposed to call me next week.  I still do not have a date to report to spring training, but God willing, I will play in AA this year.”

Mets fans have to be very excited about the progress the 19 year old Flores has made.  The sky is the limit for Flores, and I do believe at some point in 2011, he will be in AA, but I highly doubt he will break camp with Binghamton.  Regardless of his future defensive position, Flores’ bat will be his meal ticket.  In a Fall/Winter where most Mets prospects have had little success, Flores gives us something positive to discuss this off-season.

Speak Up: Lance Briggs Talks About Nate Burelson’s “Guarantee”

Bears LB Lance Briggs talked about Sunday’s game against the Lions today. He talked about what Lions WR Nate Burelson said yesterday about guaranteeing a Lions win.

Here is what Briggs said:

“It should fire them up,” Briggs said. “I know it definitely fires us up. We’ve got it pinned up everywhere in our meeting rooms.”

A reporter noted to Briggs that the Bears had won 18 straight against the Lions and wondered if it would be safe to guarantee a win.

“Everybody is calling this a trap game,” Briggs said. “That’s a trap question right there.”

Here is what Lions WR Nate Burelson said earlier this week about Sunday’s game:

“Yeah, I said we will win on Sunday,” Burleson said. “We only got five games left, and my goal is to finish the season 7-9. Like I’ve been saying all year, we don’t have a team on the schedule that we can’t beat.”

MLB Brian Urlacher had this to say about the Lions game:

“I think we’re going to win,” he said, “but I’m not going to guarantee it.”

“Yeah, I know what he’s saying,” Urlacher said of Burleson’s comment. “You fully expect to win every game. If you don’t believe that, why are you playing or why are you getting ready to play?

“I’m not sure you go out and say that, but I think we all believe that.”

Watch Footage Of A Soccer Player Soiling Himself (While He Talks About It)

Gary Lineker, England’s career leader in World Cup goals and a British icon, is also a pioneer in other ways. Apparently, during a match in the 1990 World Cup against Ireland, Lineker shat the bed–no, really. Watch above as Lineker wipes his rear on the grass after experiencing a case of the squirts, and narrates the fateful event that somehow went unnoticed to most of the general public for 20 years. As he says, thankfully, it rained that day.

The fact that he browned up his tighty-whities isn’t that special–coming from a soccer player, it happens more often than you’d think. There’s a reason there are Port-O-Potties at youth soccer tournaments. His cover-up, however, indicates that this bowel-disruption is on a completely different level–this was no mere shart. As a commenter on Youtube put it, sometimes, shit just happens. And you can’t control it.

Audio: Mitch Barnhart talks UK football

Here’s the audio of my talk with UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart outside the interview room once Kentucky had lost 24-14 to Tennessee, ending the Cats disappointing regular season at 6-6.

Barnhart said he believes UK is close, that it’s hard to get to the next step, and (oddly) mentioned that Texas had suffered a bad season. He also complimented first-year coach Joker Phillips on his discipline, and said the team needs to get where both the offense and defense are at the same level in terms of depth and talent. One year, the offense is good, the defense is not. The next year, it’s the other way around.
