B-more Blogman: Super Memories
The Ravens dropped a heartbreaker last week and it seems like the anger and pain from that disappointment has died down at least for the moment.
Now the Ravens can turn their attention towards their next opponent – The Buffalo Bills.
There is no better team to have coming into your stadium after a loss. The Bills have several talented ball players but they simply don’t have the team that should be able to stick with Baltimore and perhaps upset them on their home turf.
In addition to the Ravens matching up against Buffalo the organization will be celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Ravens first Super Bowl championship. Several old players will be in attendance to take another bow in front of their fans and there should be a special air of excitement about tomorrow’s festivities.
I’ll take it all in firsthand. When the announcement was made I was sure to circle this date on the calendar and it wasn’t because I was excited to see Lee Evans in person.
It should be a fantastic celebration of a time that many longtime fans never thought they would see in their lifetime.
WHAT TO WATCH:
The Baltimore Offense: There was a lot made of Cam Cameron’s play calling and the speculation in regards to how players felt about which numbers were called all week. This time the Ravens face an opponent that gives up massive chunks of yardage on the ground (182 yds. per contest) so you should expect the ground game to get on track early and maybe even Willis McGahee will take off his cape this time. Joe Flacco should also be able to pick on the corners if Buffalo tries to stuff the box as well. Overall it should be a good day for the offense however, if they struggle it will be interesting to see how players react.
Ravens Return Game: I guess the only good thing to say is that they haven’t fumbled yet. But both Tom Zbikowski and Jalen Parmele have been below average at best in their respective duties. Both seem indecisive and lack the explosion and the “take it the house” threat that some players at that position possess. It only seems like a matter of time before a change is made. If Josh Wilson were healthy it may have already been done but maybe the team may look towards Lardarius Webb or a potential return of Donte Stallworth as possible replacements.
Former Ravens return: I’ll be very excited to see which former Ravens will be in attendance tomorrow to the celebrate the championship. Ten years seemed to flash by quickly. I’m sure the franchise would love to celebrate that title with a new trophy this season but that still remains to be seen. I’ll be even more interested to see how Ray Lewis plays against Buffalo since he is the lone player remaining on the roster from that squad. He’ll be extra jacked I’m sure.
QUESTIONS THAT NEED ANSWERS?
Does Ed Reed return tomorrow?
Not sure, ask Ed. At least that’s what the coaches have been saying all week – that it will be Reed’s decision. Reed himself hasn’t committed one way or the other so we may not know until game time.
But here’s something to think about. Has any other team ever lost a player of his caliber and still maintained the integrity of their defense? Not many that I can think of. The Steelers Steel Curtain looked like it was made out of tissue paper without Troy Polamalu last season. I’m really excited about Reed’s return but I understand if he waits until the Miami Dolphins come to town and he takes advantage of the Bye week.
Do the Ravens really stand a chance of losing this game?
Anything is possible in the NFL so never say never. I’ve seen plenty of people point to the Ravens loss to the Bills in 2007 as an example of what can happen when you look past an opponent. But that was during the Billick era when at times the team would play down to it’s opponent. A John Harbaugh coached team has NEVER lost a game to a team with a losing record. I don’t see that starting Sunday.
Will the Ravens Pass Rush struggle against a mobile quarterback?
Jarret Johnson made some comments this week about how Ryan Fitzpatrick can a defense trouble because he can run. OK J.J. if you say so. This is the same Fitzpatrick that fumbled twice the last time he met the Ravens. But the pass rush is and probably always will be a concern regardless of the quarterback. You know things are desperate when the Ravens could be taking a look at a post-juiced Shawne Merriman to help fill the void.
What’s the Prediction?
There’s a lot going against the Bills. The Super Bowl celebration, the team upset that it let a win over Tom Brady slip away last week, and the fact the Buffalo is win-less at this point and simply doesn’t have a full team that can challenge the Ravens for four quarters. Baltimore will want to get out quickly to keep the fans in a good mood and they should cruise.
