John Rooney, Shadow Bound

-Jason Davis
A flash of mild collective surprise shot through assembled throng in the Baltimore Convention Center ballroom yesterday when the New York Red Bulls selected a certain boy names Rooney in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft. Rooney’s genes are beyond reproach – they are the same at those that allowed his brother to become a world famous striker after all – but his talents are much more suspect.

It’s not that Rooney isn’t a decent enough soccer player. He scored at the Combine, and people who watched him there told me that he can play. Whether he merits a 2nd Round selection in the Draft (if you put any stock in such a thing at all) is the main point of contention. In MLS terms, he’s average. Rooney is so far below his older brother’s level that Billy Carter could sympathize. Given that John Rooney has chosen the same profession as his ultra-famous brother, he doesn’t have too many options for escaping Wayne’s shadow.
Word is that John took a drastic pay cut to try his luck in the burgeoning American soccer league. His salary for a year will pale in comparison to what his brother makes in a week. This either proves that he’s here “just to play” or that he has carefully considered the impact being Wayne’s little brother will have/is having on his career. There is no place to hide, or more aptly, no place to hide where his quality of life wouldn’t be significantly impacted. America must have been appealing because it offers some anonymity (okay, a lot of anonymity, especially when he’s not actually engaged in the act of playing), nominally shares a language with Liverpool, and seems to be on the upswing with its attempts to play soccer.
In other words, if John Rooney didn’t really want to bounce from English town to English town while constantly being compared to, and asked about, Wayne, then MLS is a fine place to ply his trade. Aside from that bit about money (a player of John Rooney’s apparent ability just isn’t going to make much money in MLS, where salary caps and revenue streams restrain wages), and it’s unlikely that the younger Rooney will ever want for anything, shadow-dodging in the US is more easily done. In Macclesfield, John Rooney would be “Wayne Rooney’s little brother” walking down the street or having a pint at the pub. In the US, he’ll only be that out on the field. It’s something.
It would be cynical, but hardly wrong, to think Red Bull plucked Rooney out of the draft in part because of his name. They may trade on it moving forward, but he provided value to them as soon as he climbed the steps to make a few Scouse-laden comments on the ballroom stage. Twitter exploded with talk about Rooney. Wire services reported on a second round draft pick in a sport that doesn’t do drafts outside of North America, and the name “Red Bull” showed up in many more places than it might have otherwise. Red Bull’s first round pick, Penn State forward Corey Hertzog, is a good player with good potential, but drafting him didn’t earn the club much in the way of free (unexpected) press. Drafting Rooney did.
Which leads us to the question of whether or not Red Bull drafted Rooney only for his name. Of course they wouldn’t admit such a thing, and the club made sure to state their appropriate reasons for picking John in the aftermath of the Draft. If they did only want the free publicity, perhaps such a thing would reflect poorly on MLS. John Rooney isn’t a star, won’t ever enter his brother’s universe in terms of fortune and fame, and could very well flame out of Major League Soccer in the very near future. Just because the Red Bulls drafted him doesn’t mean they’re obligated to keep him around. Breathing heavy over a run-of-the-mill player who just so happens to have a famous name, and the blood that goes with it, makes us look like a bunch of daft amateurs.
But if New York reached on Rooney, it was just barely. The first half of the second round wasn’t bursting with sure things. If the Red Bulls did chose John Rooney for reasons other than his ability to kick a ball, they weren’t overtly obvious about it. The consensus seems to be that the relevance of the SuperDraft is waning rapidly, a fact that actually works in favor of the Red Bulls and any suggestion that they’re trading on Rooney’s name. If the Draft isn’t all that important, why does it really matter who they pick? If it doesn’t really matter who they pick, why not pick the player with a bit more to offer than just what he can do on the field?
Think about it this way: if reports of his salary are accurate, Rooney has already given New York publicity worth more than he’ll make this year.
He seems like a good kid, for what that’s worth, and went over to meet the Red Bull supporters who traveled down for the Draft after he was selected. They welcomed him with open arms. I’m not sure he knew what to make of the viking helmets, and the “Best Rooney ever!’ chant might have embarrassed him a bit, but he seemed happy to be here.
If John Rooney is trying to outrun his brother’s shadow, he won’t do so here. But maybe he can find just a little bit of light.

Match Fit USA

Poll: How Will Wayne Rooney Do Against Wigan?

Poll: How Will Wayne Rooney Do Against Wigan?

Wayne Rooney looks like he’ll start for Manchester United this Saturday in their match against Wigan Athletic.

Rooney, who has just returned from a sabbatical in the United States, will be stepping on to the turf at Old Trafford since October 16 when he played in the 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion. The vibe from the adoring Manchester United fans that day will be quite different this Saturday, especially after the whole transfer episode that was eventually resolved on October 22 when Rooney signed a new five-year agreement. I don’t expect United supporters to boo Rooney, but I believe he’ll receive a much quieter response from the crowd than usual. The jury will be out until Rooney regains the support of his supporters. The only way to regain their faith is by playing to the upmost of his abilities. A return to goalscoring will also help.

The challenge for Rooney is that if he doesn’t score, whether it’s this Saturday against Wigan, or in the follow-up games, the patience among United supporters may wear thin.

But what do you think? Will Rooney get back to his best form this Saturday against Wigan? Or will he be invisible like he’s been for so long? Vote in the poll below.

“What happens on the pitch stays on the pitch, it was a bit of handbags, that’s all.” – Wayne Rooney

Without looking, do you know off the top of your head who is currently atop the Italian Serie A table?  I bet you would say AC Milan or Inter Milan.  Some of you may go for Juventus.  You would be wrong if you went with any of those three footballing super-powers.  Leading the Italian league so far this year?  SS Lazio with a stunning record of 7 wins, 1 draw and 1 loss.  That loss, by the way, was in their first league match of the season, a 2-0 defeat to Sampdoria.

Now, to be fair, Lazio has only played AC Milan (a 1-1 draw) amongst the league’s usual heavyweights, but still, they are now unbeaten in eight straight league matches, and now have a chance to really prove their worth tomorrow morning when they face bitter rivals and derby foes AS Roma.

Lazio are winning through one of the stingiest defenses in club football right now.  Their keeper, Fernando Muslera, has only conceded six times in nine matches, and again, two of those were in the loss to Sampdoria.  They are certainly not easy to crack open.  They don’t score a ton, to be honest, tallying 13 times in these nine matches, but when you play defense like they do, one or two goals will mostly be enough to win.

Their manager is an interesting story.  His name is Edoardo Reja, and he met his wife Livia while he was rooming with current England gaffer Fabio Capello when they both played for Ferrara.  He has never been considered to be a top manager, but he’s really done a job with this squad so far, and has them leading one of the more prestigious club leagues in Europe.

Five of their next eight matches are at home, before the Italian holiday break.  The big ones are obviously the derby match tomorrow morning against Roma, home encounters with Napoli and Inter Milan, and an away tussle with Juventus.  Lazio could certainly be one of the squads to make some noise during this end of Autumn/beginning of Winter period that’s upcoming.  They will be one to watch, for sure.

Let’s see what we have for television and internet today.  It’s a huge day of matches, to be honest.

Obviously, a lot of us will be focused on the two MLS playoff matches happening today.  Colorado and FC Dallas (the two away teams today) hold one goal aggregate advantages coming into today, so those matches will be highly charged, I would imagine.  With San Jose eliminating the Red Bulls on Thursday evening, MLS is once again proving that their playoffs are not to be missed.  It’s a pretty good day of Prem action, with Spurs-Bolton in the early match, and a sneaky tough Wolves team traveling to Old Trafford to face the still-Rooney-less Red Devils.  The Fulham-Villa match has the air of desperation hanging over it, as both of those squads really need to build up some points before the relatively awful December fixture crush starts.  All in all, though, it’s quite a day of matches available today.  I hope you enjoy some of them.

Thanks as always for your clicks and comments.  We truly do appreciate it.  Sorry for the lack of a podcast this past week, we ran into some time commitments that did not allow us to get together to record.  I believe that we’ll have one this next week, so stay tuned for that.  Have a great Saturday and enjoy the matches.

Gerrard Gives Liverpool And Rooney A Welcome Boost

June 17, 2010 - Cape Town, SOUTH AFRICA - epa02207645 England soccer team players Steven Gerrard (L) and Wayne Rooney talk during their team's training session at the Green Point Stadium in Cape Town, South Africa, 17 June 2010. England will face Algeria on June 18 in their FIFA 2010 World Cup group C soccer match in Cape Town.
Steven Gerrard gave us all a timely reminder of his quality with a stunning hat-trick to help Liverpool overcome a stubborn Napoli side. Will this performance mark the general return to form of midfielder and could he be the inspiration for another England star to return to form?

We all know the ability that Gerrard has, and there is no need to harp on about the number of times he has come to Liverpool’s rescue. However even Liverpool’s inspirational captain has struggled to produce displays resembling his usual self this season.

In many ways I think Gerrard has suffered with the same World Cup hangover that has seen Wayne Rooney desperately lacking in form during the opening stages of the Premier League campaign. Excluding the Napoli game, there hasn’t been any standout displays from the Liverpool skipper and generally there has just not been the same intensity in his performances.

Intensity is what makes Gerrard and Rooney so important to Liverpool and Manchester United respectively, and with the pair obviously short of confidence after the World Cup, it is only understandable that they looked to almost play in their comfort zone when they returned to domestic football.

But it was inevitable that Gerrard would show us that form really is temporary as his confidence grew. In many ways though you feel he struggled so much because of the general feeling of disappointment around the club during the opening weeks of the season.

In the last few weeks though things have gradually picked up for Liverpool both on and off the field, and it was only a matter of time before Gerrard joined the party.  With United also beginning to reach their top form, Rooney should also find it easier to perform at his best when he returns from injury.

Gerrard’s return to form should give Rooney confidence because it demonstrates that it can be done. As an England fan, and more importantly a football fan it is crucial that we see the both of the England stars firing on all cylinders in the not so distant future, because the Premier League is definitely a better place as a result.

Edenbridge Bonfire Society to Burn Wayne Rooney in Effigy

Wayne will simply never understand the true nature of sacrifice.

I mean, really, there isn’t much I can add to this that the title doesn’t already tell you. One should take special note of the green Shrek ears, the bag full of money in Wayne’s right hand, and the newly-signed Manchester United contract under his left arm.

The most surprising thing about this event, actually, is that it’s not Manchester United fans who are holding it. Instead, it’s the Edenbridge Bonfire Society, who have previously set the likes of Katie Price and Russell Brand alight. Traditionally, The whole thing is the capping moment of their torchlight procession and firework celebration, which starts at 6:15 sharp in Edenbridge. If you’re in the area, the whole thing might be worth checking out; there’s a parade on everything.

Society spokesman Charles Laver – who previously dismissed Rooney’s candicacy as he was simply being a “greedy little boy” – had this to say on Rooney’s selection:

“I hate football myself so I’m quite happy to burn a footballer. One of our members is a big Man U fan, so he’s been advising us on getting all the details of the kit just right.”

Rooney’s reinforced steel structure  – which stands 49 feet tall – is packed with fireworks. 15,000 spectators are anticipated at the event; there’s no word on whether or not the Rooneys will be bringing Kai, but something tells me “no”.

Breaking news: Rooney to stay at Manchester United

SOCCER-CHAMPIONS/Well, what an extraordinary twist this is: Wayne Rooney has agreed a new five-year deal with Manchester United and is staying at Old Trafford after all. Here’s the club statement:

Wayne Rooney has agreed a new 5 year contract to stay at Manchester United until at least June 2015.

The agreement follows intensive discussions between the Club and the player’s representatives and means that by the end of his contract Wayne will have been a Manchester United player for 11 years.

Sir Alex Ferguson said: “It’s been a difficult week, but the intensity of the coverage is what we expect at Manchester United.  I said to the boy that the door is always open and I’m delighted Wayne has agreed to stay.

“Sometimes, when you’re in a club, it can be hard to realise just how big it is and it takes something like the events of the last few days to make you understand.  I think Wayne now understands what a great club Manchester United is.

“I’m pleased he has accepted the challenge to guide the younger players and establish himself as one of United’s great players. It shows character and belief in what we stand for.

“I’m sure everyone involved with the Club will now get behind Wayne and show him the support he needs to produce the performances we know he is capable of.”

Wayne Rooney said: “I’m delighted to sign another deal at United.  In the last couple of days, I’ve talked to the Manager and the owners and they’ve convinced me this is where I belong.  I said on Wednesday the Manager’s a genius and it’s his belief and support that have convinced me to stay.

“I’m signing a new deal in the absolute belief that the management, coaching staff, board and owners are totally committed to making sure United maintains its proud winning history – which is the reason I joined the Club in the first place.

“I’m sure the fans over the last week have felt let down by what they’ve read and seen.  But my position was from concern over the future.  The fans have been brilliant with me since I arrived and it’s up to me through my performances to win them over again.”

UPDATE: One interesting thing to note here is that Jose Mourinho was right all along when he predicted Rooney would end up staying. What was it he said? The “big man” will persuade him his future is at Old Trafford?

I guess reports of Ferguson’s diminishing powers were overstated somewhat. He can still be the most persuasive man in football…
