The NCAA has classified Rivals.com as a recruiting service. That the big news circulating in the recruiting world. The NCAA is now saying that college programs can no longer subscribe to recruiting services that offer videos for a paid membership.
Recruiting services can still provide videos but it has to be for the entire public to view and it has to be free. Rivals’ entire business model is based on the videos they provide as a subscription for its members only. I think this would have a negative affect on their entire business.
Rivals.com is going to suffer financially because most of the subscribers to their exclusive videos are college programs.
Do you think this is another example of how the NCAA wants to control every aspect of college sports? The NCAA is not benefiting financially from what Rivals.com was doing; therefore they want to put this company out of business.
Recruiting on all levels is very competitive; college coaches cannot be everywhere to scout and recruit the millions of student athletes out there. Having services that can provide exclusive videos can make it easier for college programs to scout players. I don’t think college coaches are lazy but if you can sit at your computer and view hundreds of videos of potential college recruits for a small membership fee then, why not?
Now it’s not a violation for college programs to view videos of student athletes by services that are available to everyone for free, such as YouTube, or receive a link to these video websites.
I don’t understand the NCAA’s policy on membership video services. Shouldn’t anyone who has the ability to create a legitimate recruiting service that provides valuable information to college coaches be able to do so?
There are too many rules involving the NCAA and I think it would be almost impossible for college programs to not violate any of the millions of rules the NCAA has. It’s almost like you have to have your compliance department also be your legal department in order to understand all the rules and regulations the NCAA has in place.
The next step will be the elimination of AAU basketball or hardcore restrictions on football camps because the NCAA is not receiving their fair share of these profits.
What are your thoughts on this latest ruling by the NCAA?
