Poll: How Will Wayne Rooney Do Against Wigan?

Poll: How Will Wayne Rooney Do Against Wigan?

Wayne Rooney looks like he’ll start for Manchester United this Saturday in their match against Wigan Athletic.

Rooney, who has just returned from a sabbatical in the United States, will be stepping on to the turf at Old Trafford since October 16 when he played in the 2-2 draw against West Bromwich Albion. The vibe from the adoring Manchester United fans that day will be quite different this Saturday, especially after the whole transfer episode that was eventually resolved on October 22 when Rooney signed a new five-year agreement. I don’t expect United supporters to boo Rooney, but I believe he’ll receive a much quieter response from the crowd than usual. The jury will be out until Rooney regains the support of his supporters. The only way to regain their faith is by playing to the upmost of his abilities. A return to goalscoring will also help.

The challenge for Rooney is that if he doesn’t score, whether it’s this Saturday against Wigan, or in the follow-up games, the patience among United supporters may wear thin.

But what do you think? Will Rooney get back to his best form this Saturday against Wigan? Or will he be invisible like he’s been for so long? Vote in the poll below.

Poll: What Should Peyton Hillis’ Nickname Be?

After running back Peyton Hillis’ monstrous day on Sunday, the nickname-guessing is out in full force. After all, this rumbling back has been so integral to the offense this season that it’s becoming imperative that he gets a nickname. Just as we’re all hoping Colt can become the “real McCoy” and earn a nickname of his own.

What’s that, you say? That nickname for McCoy was lame and too obvious? Too bad!

Anyway, if you don’t see any Hillis nicknames below that you like, be sure to add your own in the comments. Thanks to all the people who have been coming up with these awesome and inspired nicknames!

Poll: Who Will Win This Season’s First Manchester Derby?

Poll: Who Will Win This Seasons First Manchester Derby?

The first installment of this season’s Manchester Derby takes place on Wednesday at Eastlands. Manchester United are coming off of a dramatic win at home where South Korean midfielder Ji-Sung Park bagged a brace with the winner coming very late on. It was one of those weekends in the Premier League where not only did United win, albeit not very convincingly, but also a weekend where teams either side of the Red Devils lost.

United will of course only be worried about their results, but Chelsea’s 0-2 loss at Anfield and Arsenal’s 1-0 loss to Newcastle seems to have implemented a ‘top 2′ in the league. As far as the win v Wolves, United were far from their cohesive best as what was very close to a B squad experienced a myriad of problems in attempting to dispose of Wolves. Bebe was quite poor in midfield while Gabriel Obertan and John O’Shea, although decent on the day, failed to provide any real spark of creativity for United.

Manchester City are too coming off of a win. City traveled to the Hawthorns where they disposed of a West Brom side who’ve commited to playing football this season to the tune of some fine results. Summer signing Mario Balotelli proved a good buy when he too scored a brace for the Citizens. Balotelli also saw red in the game and will now serve a three match ban.

With Carlos Tevez back in the lineup, City will always pose a threat in attack. David Silva has been in scintillating form for the past month and with Balotelli now out, the possibility of a start for winger Adam Johnson could prove daunting for United’s defense.

As City continue to ambitiously spend an inordinate amount of money on new blood, each installment of the Manchester Derby grows in stature and anticipation. And just as City’s attack starts to congeal, so too does United’s defense began to instill that bit of confidence into the rest of the team.

On Wednesday, all eyes will be on Eastlands as the Manchester Derby is sure to thrill. So who takes the three points and the crown of Manchester’s finest?

Poll: When Was The Last Time You Kicked A Soccer Ball?

SOCCER/FUTBOL APERTURA 2010 CRUZ AZUL VS PACHUCA General view of the ball, during week 4 game of the 2010 Apertura tournament of mexican soccer./Vista general del balon, durante juego de la jornada 4 del torneo Apertura 2010 del futbol mexicano. 14 August 2010 MEXSPORT/OMAR MARTINEZ Photo via Newscom

I was driving down the road the other day when I had a thought. I watch and digest so much soccer on a daily basis that I wondered when was the last time I actually kicked a ball, which is such a central figure of the sport I watch. For me it was a few weeks ago during a kick-a-bout with my children before or after my daughter’s last soccer match. But then I wondered how long it’s been for you, the readers.

Please note that the post isn’t meant to judge at all. Whether you kick a ball every day or haven’t kicked it in years doesn’t matter. It’s more of a question to find out how connected we are to the game itself and whether that bond is closer on television and the Internet than it is on a local level, whether it’s in your backyard or nearest soccer pitch.

Thanks in advance for voting.
