Please stop comparing your son to top rated athletes during the athletic recruiting process!

Please do not compare your son to top rated athletes during the recruiting process! This past week I received an email from a parent comparing his son (now called Athlete A) to another athlete who plays in the same area (now called Athlete B).  Athlete A is a solid high school player.  He rushed for over 900 yards for a team that made the playoffs this fall on the football field.  Athlete A has worked hard and done a nice job on the football field.  He has Division III college coaches interested in his skills.

Athlete B on the other hand received multiple Division I scholarship offers before committing to a program close to home as a sophomore.  He has helped his team to two straight State titles and his club is favored to win their third championship in a row very soon.  Athlete B has moved from position to position during his high school career and is just a freak of nature.  He has rushed for over 1,800 yards this season and will go down as one of the top high school athletes ever to play in his State.

So my first question that popped into my mind when reading this email is what the eff is this dad thinking?  I know parents are the most bias people in the world and can’t see situations regarding their children with a major bias towards their son or daughter.  But seriously, are you kidding me?

This happens all the time and every single time I hear it, read it, or have to speak to someone about it it makes me sick.  One thing I realized a long time ago is that parents can never take the bias out when evaluation their child.  I have seen it from crazy parents who try to live through their son to college coaches who should know what happens during the recruiting process.

I have even written about this multiple times but I still must stress that the one thing that parents and their children need to worry about is the one thing that they can control, themselves.  College coaches are looking for certain things and if an athlete gets an offer who puts up less stats, this player may have been the perfect height, weight, strength, or have the athletic ability that a college coach is looking for.

Here is a great example.  Last year, two quarterbacks who played in the same conference started getting recruiting attention.  One was named All State (now called Recruit A) and another did not even receive All Conference honors (Recruit B).  This year, Recruit A has thrown for over 2,100 yards, 25 touchdowns, and his team is undefeated.  Recruit B has tossed for 891 yards, 12 touchdowns, 6 interceptions, and his season is already over.

By looking at those numbers and stats, you would think picking out the one with the Division I offer would be easy.  But it is the one with the lesser numbers.  Both athletes went to camps this summer and Recruit B did a better job impressing college coaches when it mattered most.  I can bet that Recruit A is bitter about this and I am sure his parents are too.

What this story boils down to is that it is not worth comparing your son to other athletes.  I don’t care if he out gained the athlete going to State University.  It may be a great accomplishment but that doesn’t mean State University will come calling you with a scholarship.  Take care of what you can take care of and don’t compare yourself or your children to other athletes.  It will just end in frustration.

Your Weekend Preview: I finished this at 2am, please ignore the typos Edition

Estudiantes de La Plata v. C.A. Vélez Sarsfield (Friday)

This is probably the biggest match in Argentina’s Primera Division so far this season and it involves neither River Plate (8th place) nor Boca Juniors (10th place). No, it features first place Estudiantes and second place Vélez. The two teams are separated by three points, but Vélez have a better goal differential so a win and they will be all alone in first place. There is also a chance that if Arsenal win big in their match against Godoy Cruz, Estudiantes could drop all the way to third place. Fun Fact: Striker Santiago Silva is the only foreigner in Vélez’s first team- he’s Uruguayan. Fun Fact 2: Estudiantes- the “Rat Stabbers”- also only have one foreign player on their senior roster and he is also a striker- Hernán Rodrigo López. Care to guess his nation of origin? Yup, Uruguay.

Ross County F.C. v. Raith Rovers F.C. (Saturday)

The panic button hasn’t been pressed yet, but let’s just say there are some “hovering hands” in Dingwall these days. Sure, everyone is excited that the club has reached the finals of the ALBA Challenge Cup, but they’ve also noticed that the Staggies are only safe from relegation- for the moment- on goal differential and have a very difficult spell ahead of them, beginning with this weekend’s match against second place Raith Rovers. There is, however, a wild card in this scenario: Dundee’s entrance into administration could see them docked points or, as was the case for Livingston (the most recent club to go belly-up) relegated all the way to the Third Division, meaning County would only have to finish ahead of one other team to stay up. In the words of Chip Diller, “Remain calm!! All is well!!”

Real Salt Lake v. Colorado Rapids (Saturday)

This is some kind of derby, isn’t it? The Old Oaken Bucket or the Apple Cup, or something? You can look it up, that’s the other reason the internet exists. In real terms, however, there’s not a lot to play for if your a Colorado Rapid- you’re the eighth seed in the playoffs and you can only improve your position if you win and San Jose draws or loses. If you do that…you’re still only the seventh seed. Things are a bit more interesting for Real Salt Lake- they are still in contention for both the Western Conference Championship and the Supporters’ Shield, but they’ll need to win this match and hope for no better than a draw from the Galaxy if they are to claim those two titles. Fun Fact: Does anyone know if Colorado’s Danny Earls is the only Irishman in MLS? I think he might be.

Los Angeles Galaxy v. F.C. Dallas (Sunday)

On paper these are two of the better teams in the league, but I think this match may be a rout. Dallas cannot improve their playoff position no matter the outcome so I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest that they may rest some players. Meanwhile, the Galaxy have to win in order to ensure that they win the Western Conference and the Supporters’ Shield. Additionally, Edson Buddle should be fired up to score some goals to make sure that the scoring title isn’t taken away from him by San Jose’s Chris Wondolowski, a player whose career began with the Chico Rooks of the NPSL- that’s the fourth tier of American soccer, folks. That kind of makes you wonder how some players catch Bob Bradley’s dead eyes and others don’t. Fun Fact: Wondolowski has never been capped at any level.

Manchester City F.C. v. Arsenal F.C. (Sunday)

This may not make a lick of sense, but the only reason that this match interests me is because it’s an important one. It’s another “reality check” for Citeh- they have the points total, but can they handle the big teams? In this case, I think they can. I’ve seen nothing from Arsenal this season which makes me think they are going to win the league. If I had to put my money on their finishing position I’d pick fourth. City, meanwhile, may be the most legitimate challengers to Chelsea’s title aspirations. Why? I’ll give you two words- Carlos Tevez. I’ve never been one of his biggest fans, but so far this season- and especially against Blackpool- he’s been absolutely dominant. Fun Fact: Does Arsene Wenger have a facial expression that doesn’t involve pursing his lips? I didn’t think so.

PSV Eindhoven v. Feyenoord Rotterdam (Sunday)

This is the match between two of the Netherlands three biggest clubs that isn’t a derby of any kind and that doesn’t seem fair. Being in first place and involved in the Europa League will probably help PSV to overcome this slight, but Feyenoord may have a more difficult time. The Rotterdam side- winners of 14 Dutch titles, 11 Dutch Cups, 2 UEFA Cups, and one European Cup- are in 15th place and only out of the relegation zone on the basis of having a better goal differential than SBV Vitesse. Feyenoord haven’t won a match since August and that win was over…wait for it…Vitesse. Fun Fact: PSV have a midfielder with one of the best names in football, Funso Ojo. Fun Fact 2: Cardiff City and Welsh international Craig Bellamy is a big Feyenoord fan, so they’ve got that going for them, which is nice.

Celtic F.C. v. Rangers F.C. (Sunday)

Here’s a shock- this weekend’s version of the Old Firm Derby finds both Glasgow clubs with 24 points and separated by only one goal in the differential column! That’s right, only eight matches into the SPL season and these two clubs have already opened up an eleven point gap on third place Motherwell. I used to think that Celtic and Rangers toddling off to try their luck in the EPL would be bad for Scottish football- now I’m not so sure. Their departure might lessen whatever stature the Scottish game still retains, but what would be left behind would be more competitive, and maybe that would be better. Fun Fact: A reporter once asked former Celtic manager Gordon Strachan for a “quick word”- the Wee Man said, “Velocity,” and walked away. BAZINGA!!

F.C. Zenit St. Petersburg v. F.C. Anzhi Makhachkala (Sunday)

The only reason I chose to preview this match is because the word, “Makhachkala” makes me laugh. But as long as we’re here… It will come as no surprise to those of you who follow European football that Zenit are in first place in the Russian Premier League- six points ahead of second place Rubin Kazan, with two games in hand, and a +32 goal differential. F.C. Anzhi? They’re struggling just a bit, languishing just a point above the relegation zone. Fun Fact: One of Zenit’s coaches is Igor Simutenkov, last seen by most of you when he was a K.C. Wizard. Fun Fact 2: F.C. Anzhi are from the Russian region of Dagestan- how dangerous is Dagestan, you ask? Well, when you enter the word into Google the first two words that appear are “massacre” and “beheading.” Shall book you a flight?
