Cowboys Currently Sit With The Number 8 Pick In 2010 NFL Draft
The latest calculations which take team record and strength of schedule into account have determined the current 2010 NFL draft order through week 13. As it stands now, the Dallas Cowboys would hold the eighth overall pick in the first-round following their win over the Indianapolis Colts. Prior to this week, Dallas had the number six spot.
The current top five in order is Carolina, Detroit, Cincinnati, Buffalo, and Arizona. Just falling short of the top five are Denver Broncos and San Francisco 49ers at pick 6 and 7, respectively. Up next are our Dallas Cowboys with the Redskins and Titans rounding out the top ten.
As Dallas has improved under interim coach Jason Garrett, their draft position has begun to slide away from the top. At pick six just last week, the Cowboys sat in prime position to pick up one of the top cornerbacks in this year’s class — Patrick Peterson of LSU or Nebraska’s Prince Amukamara. Now it seems that Dallas will have to look at other options.
With the top corners likely off of the board at this point Dallas would be forced to address other needs. Does that mean offensive line? How about defensive line or even a potential franchise quarterback?
Where Dallas sits now, the best value would be at defensive line with a guy like Marcell Dareus or Da’Quan Bowers — perhaps North Carolina’s Robert Quinn would still be available.
Dallas would need to win a few more games to end the season and pick around the middle of the first-round to get good value at offensive line. If they pick around the middle of the round, a guy like Anthony Castonzo from Boston College, Gabe Carimi of Wisconsin, or Colorado’s Nate Solder would be excellent choices.
Outside of defensive line, cornerback, and offensive line, there is another position that would provide interesting scenarios. Dallas could have a shot at the likes of Ryan Mallett, Jake Locker, or Cam Newton when they are on the clock. Could Dallas pull the trigger on one of these potential franchise quarterbacks and groom them under Romo for a few years like Green Bay did with Aaron Rodgers?
Mallett would be the most intriguing quarterback outside of Andrew Luck, but I could see some outcry from the fanbase if Jerry Jones was to go for a signal-caller.
What would you think if the team took a quarterback in the first-round and what do you think is the best option where the Cowboys currently sit in the draft order? Sound off in the comments section!
Silvio Garcia: Branch Rickey’s pick to break the colour barrier
When Branch Rickey began began the initiative to break baseball’s colour barrier, he created a shortlist of candidates who he thought had both the playing ability and the character to blaze the trail. One of them was Cuban Silvio Garcia.
According to Negro League owners and executives, it was Monte Irvin, not Jackie Robinson, who had been first in line on the unofficial list of candidates to integrate baseball. He likely would have been the first too, had he not passed his draft physical and gone on to serve in World War II. Rickey then turned his focus to Silvio Garcia.
In the 1940s, when the president of the Brooklyn Dodgers, Branch Rickey, started thinking about bringing a black player to the major leagues, he initially considered the star Cuban shortstop of the day, Silvio García. According to Edel Casas, the noted Cuban baseball historian, Rickey met with García in Havana in 1945 to explore the possibility of bringing the excellent right-handed hitter to the Dodgers. In the course of the interview, Rickey asked García, “What would you do if a white American slapped your face?” García’s response was simple and sincere. “I kill him,” he said.
That ended that conversation, and opened the door for Jackie Robinson.
Garcia still went on to break a colour barrier, although not in the Major Leagues. On April 9, 1952, Garcia along with teammates George Handy and Angel Scull, broke the colour barrier in the Florida International League when they played for the Miami Beach Flamingos.
Garcia spent most of his career playing in the large shadow cast by companero Martin Dihigo. Like Dihigo, Garcia could both pitch and play shortstop. In his first season he went 10-2, but finished 2nd in wins to Dihigo. In 1938 he went to the Mexican League and posted a 1.68 ERA.. trailing only Dihigo. He gave up pitching in 1940 to focus on shortstop. He was a bona-fide stud playing in Cuba, Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Negro Leagues. He was consistently at the top or near the top of the leaderboard in average and doubles. He even played in Canada for the Sherbrooke Athlétiques of the Provincial League, a league that welcomed blacks. He won the triple crown, especially rare yet even moreso for a shortstop. He led the league in homers (21) doubles (29) and RBI (116). He hit .365/.435/.608.
Tommy Lasorda is on the record having said that Garcia is the toughest hitter he ever faced in Cuba.
