Nitt Links: Trying To Find A Vision
Penn State basketball has been the butt end of just about every joke in the book. For a casual fan, it’s easy to brush the program aside, when they have a big game, you watch because you feel like you should, but it doesn’t make or break your day. For me, I came to Penn State wanting to leave a mark on the athletic department and I saw basketball as a place to try and do that. I’ve been to road games, I’ve sat outside the BJC all day and played football. I saw the team win the NIT, and I’ve seen what Penn State basketball could be. Sure “it was just the NIT” but during that season Penn State really cared about basketball. Being on the bubble was fun, you might laugh at it now, but you cared, even if it was just a little bit.
That’s what makes last night so frustrating. Everything went wrong. The fans try and get behind a team, but this program really has no core. Ed DeChellis is a mid-major coach trying his best in a Big Ten world. Tim Curley is a guy who’s glad basketball makes him 6mill a year, and the players are trying their hardest to turn that into wins. It just doesn’t add up. I’m not tell you anything you don’t already know, but if there was a night it was obvious, it was last night.
What does the future hold? I would wait before I said the sky was falling this season. Being beat by the defending ACC Champs isn’t the end of the world, but a red flag has been raise. Lets see how long anybody cares.

Nitt Links: Gamecocks And Gators
This weekend as you well know Penn State will find out which part of Florida they’re headed towards for their next bowl game. Ultimately in the grand scheme of things the saga of the 2010 season has already been written. Short of an epic bowl game, the story is more or less over, but even so, Penn State has a chance to start the 2011 chapter off on the right foot.
National perception is almost as important as the wins and the losses. Obviously, winning is a big step in the right direction, but Penn State has a chance to stumble through a season and end it playing Florida. A program that is not far removed from the national spotlight and falls under the always popular category of “elite”. Perhaps the gospel of Tim Tebow isn’t being blasted through every media outlet anymore, but Florida is a name. And names mean something.
So while the details of the SEC rankings, and the 16 teams in the Big Ten that all have the same record is sorted out, don’t underestimate the importance this bowl game could have on the near future.
And, if I’m wrong, we can just play Spurrier.

Penn State Continues to Rule Big Ten Football TV Ratings
Since beginning conference competition in 1993, Penn State has played in seven of the top 15 rated Big Ten football games on ESPN, the most of any Big Ten team (Michigan is next with five). The Nittany Lions have played in six of top 15 highest viewed Big Ten games on ESPN, tied for first among conference squads (with Michigan).

The visiting Lions (6-2) erased an 11-point second-half deficit to force overtime, but fell to Boston College (7-0), 113-104. Sophomore Alex Bentley was 12-for-22 from the field, including the game-tying shot with 0.5 seconds left in regulation, on the way to a career-high 31 points.

Nitt Links: Going Gator Hunting In The Outback Without A Compass
I just want to make the joke now. Pitt is headed to the Compass Bowl because their program has no direction. I’m sure somebody got that joke in print before I did, but if you’re in need of a real zinger around the watercooler, there you go. And there’s Michigan. Headed to the Gator Bowl to play a team that beat Florida while only attempting 9 passes. If you’re looking for a good time, watch a bad Michigan defense get lit up by a offense that isn’t trying hard to do anything but run the ball over and over again.
