News & Notes: Chester-Kahlil Scuffle, Pat Mannelly’s Record and Pisa’s Knee Injury

Lets start with a disappointing free agent signing by the Bears, Chester Taylor. Taylor’s nickname is “Che Tay” sounds friendly right? Not yesterday.

According to Bears officials, running backs Chester Taylor and Kahlil Bell had to be separated during practice yesterday afternoon in the Walter Payton Center. The scuffle was broken up before it could escalate to something worse.

Head coach Lovie Smith had no comment on the scuffle between Taylor and Bell.

This isn’t the smartest move by “Che Tay” considering the Bears signed him to big money to be that change of pace back behind Matt Forte and he hasn’t contributed much this season.

In 11 games this season, Taylor has 213 yards on 82 carries and one touchdown, averaging 2.6 ypc. He has also added 14 catches for 100 yards. With those stats their is no reason for Taylor to be fighting in practice.

Taylor needs to worry about himself  because if he can’t step it up he could be looking for a new gig next season.

Kahlil Bell on the other hand is probably gone after this season, considering he hasn’t appeared in a game this season and is a free agent once the year is over.

Fighting in practice is not like Bears players, but the last time it did happen it was during the 2006 Super Bowl run between running backs Thomas Jones and Cedric Benson. I wonder if fighting between running backs leads teams to Super Bowls, probably not, but it might help the Bears chances this year.

In other news, long snapper Pat Mannelly became the first player in franchise history to play in 200 regular-season games last Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles. Mannelly has been so consistent in those 200 games, it’s not that easy being a long snapper in the NFL, it’s impressive that Mannelly has managed to stay healthy long enough to break some records. I don’t know how much Mannelly has left in him, but he will be honored by the Bears once he retires, I guarantee that.

Lastly, LB Pisa Tinoisamoa’s knee is acting up again. He missed practiced Wednesday and was limited yesterday, his knee injuries seem to be lingering. He is listed as questionable for the Lions on Sunday and if he can’t play expect Nick Roach to step in to replace him for the second time this season.

Head coach Lovie Smith had this to say about Pisa’s knee:

“Pisa has a little soreness in his knee, so he wasn’t able to do a whole lot today, a little bit of a concern for him.”

It might be better to let Tinoisamoa rest his knee, but he needs to get his knee problems figured out before the final four game stretch, if he can’t he might not be back next season. Tinoisamoa is a free agent and I’m sure the Bears want to resign him, but his knee problems have to improve. Look for him to rest this Sunday.

It’s never good news to hear that a player has been injured, but this will certainly make Nittany Lion fans choke back a little smile. Alabama’s reigning Heisman-Trophy-winning running back suffered a knee injury in practice on Monday.

Alabama running back Mark Ingram suffered a knee injury late in Monday’s practice, coach Nick Saban announced in a statement Tuesday, and has been ruled out for Saturday night’s season opener against San Jose State

Ingram, who last year became the first Crimson Tide player to win the Heisman Trophy, had “an arthroscopic procedure” done Tuesday morning, according to the statement.

“It was a situation where everyone involved thought it would be better to take care of now, so he would not have any issues with it later in the season,” Saban said.

All that is known for now is that Ingram will sit out week one. After that he’s day-to-day so there’s a good chance he could come back when Penn State travels to Tuscaloosa on September 11.

Alabama is still Alabama, and they are loaded with talent. But playing them without Mark Ingram, or even Mark Ingram at 50%, only helps Penn State’s chances.

The day after Alabama tailback Mark Ingram underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee brought positive news for his recovery.

“Mark is doing extremely well,” Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban said after practice Wednesday. “He didn’t have a lot of swelling, which is a good sign. That has a lot to do with how quickly he can come back.”

Gentry Estes: Mark Ingram ‘doing extremely well’ so far in recovery

Relief. The ol’ Nicktator doesn’t exactly throw around the phrase “doing extremely well” very often. Hopefully this portends Ingram’s return will be on the low end of the range thrown out there.

Mark Ingram Has Knee Surgery, Will Miss Season Opener

Talk about the kind of thing you dread seeing happen in a practice preparing for a cupcake:

Alabama’s Heisman Trophy-winning tailback Mark Ingram underwent arthroscopic surgery this morning on his left knee, according to a statement by Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban.

Ingram will be out for Saturday’s game against San Jose State and evaluated on a week-to-week basis after that. Alabama hosts Penn State on Sept. 11 and visits Duke on Sept. 18.

Apparently the injury happened late in practice yesterday, but there is no word just yet on the circumstances surrounding it.

The good news is that Saban made it very clear that this was a minor injury that would allow for a full recovery in a relatively short period of time. Clearly this was something that the coaching staff wanted to go ahead and get done now so Ingram would be 100% healthy once the season really got going. From that perspective, step back from the ledge here. It’s a short term loss but a long-term gain in a few weeks, and it’s better to see Ingram go ahead and get this taken care of now instead of fighting lingering knee issues all year long. I tend to think it is much preferable to miss some time early but get fully healthy in a few weeks than it is to have a situation like we did a year ago with Julio Jones, where he plays every week but really isn’t getting back near 100% until November rolls around.

With that said, however, the Penn State game is only about eleven days away, and while it wouldn’t be completely out of the question for him to return for that game, that would be an aggressive recovery schedule. The odds are probably that he misses the Penn State game altogether, or at least that Trent Richardson shoulders the bulk of the load. Until Ingram can get a bill of clean health and regains all strength in his knee, it’s going to be up to Richardson, Eddie Lacy, and Demetrius Goode to carry the load. For now, I imagine that Ingram will perhaps return for the Duke game, certainly for the Arkansas game, but that he will likely miss the Penn State game.

The Penn State game looks to be the only source of concern right now. We should be able to beat both San Jose State and Duke even without the services of Ingram, and we’re 26 days away from making the road trip to Fayetteville to take on Arkansas. If this injury is as minor as it has been described by Saban and various media outlets, Ingram ought to be fine and ready to go by the time we get the Hogs. Make no mistake about it, though, Richardson, Lacy, and Goode are probably going to have to get the job done against Penn State. For us to win there, they’ll need to play well and the rest of the offense will need to play accordingly as well.

Hmm, interesting. I suppose his weight increase would be related to the knee injury, and it would explain why he played so much defensive end in the A-Day game. In any event, if the 260 number is accurate, it shouldn’t be an issue now. He was listed at 255 in the media guide a year ago, and his playing weight was likely in the same ballpark then.
