The Real Importance Of High School Sports Today

High school is a time to make friends, get good grades, participate in activities and prepare for the future. Unfortunately, due to budget cuts, some schools have opted out of high school sports, believing that money would be better spent on academics. I understand that academics come first, but sacrificing high school sports lessens every child’s high school experience, their ability to perform at optimum academic levels and develop into a well-rounded adult.

The Importance of High School Sports Can Be Found in Elementary School

During a child’s elementary school years, children typically lose their recess privileges as a consequence to poor behavior. This consequence can have the opposite of the desired effect. Recess is the place where kids let out their aggression and release frustration and anger, allowing the children to better cope with the aspects of school they do not enjoy.

High School Sports Promote Bonding and Encouragement

What many administrators, teachers and parents fail to realize is that high school sports offer teenagers the same outlet. Participating in high school sports is important for motor skill development, maintaining a healthy exercise program and provides for a release of anger when the academic stressors become overwhelming. When youth participate in high school sports they release endorphins which helps decrease depression and increases energy. Most high schools, if not all, require at least a C average to participate in these sports, which provides the child with accountability. High school sports increase bonding between children and their parents when parents help with skills and come to games to cheer their child on.

High School Sports Boost Overall Morale And Support

High school sports offer a release that is needed for every student. High School Sports enables the entire school to come together, whether playing, or observing, to cheer for their school. If your child is having difficulty making friends encourage them to join a high school activity or to go to a game and cheer for their school. It boosts school morale when students meet to cheer for their team. While offering an enjoyable distraction from the stressors of school, teenager’s negative perception of school as a place akin to a prison is replaced with increased school pride. This increased interest in school generally results in increased enjoyment in academics, resulting in better overall test scores and grades.

Adults Look Back on High School Sports Fondly

When adults look back on their time in school many do not remember their teachers, classes or grades but they do remember the high school sports they participated in or observed. They often look back on these memories fondly and look forward to their children having similar experiences. Encourage your teenager’s high school to keep high school sports around so every teenager can have a better overall high school experience.

Are High School Coaches To Blame?

There are many talented high school student athletes all over the country looking to be recruited by college programs, but what happens when talented high school athletes slip through the cracks of the college recruiting process?

Who is to blame if a talented ballplayer somehow becomes invisible to college coaches?  For as long as I can remember, it has been the role of high school coaches to assist their players with the recruiting process, but what happens if the high school coach screws up?  Who is to blame if one of that coach’s players ends up with no possibilities of being recruited for college or having quality choices of college programs?

This is a sensitive subject because you’re talking about high school coaches that, for the most part, do an excellent job with their players.  From where I sit, I’ve heard too many stories of talented high school athletes being misused and abuse in the college recruiting process so, are high school coaches to blame?

Don’t fall for the Preferred Walk-on scam

Many high school student athletes who are looking to play at a major college program will be offered a Preferred Walk-on opportunity. Whatever you do, don’t fall for this scam.

A Preferred Walk-on status generally means that college coaches really like you and want you to be a member of their team but they do not have a scholarship or any type of money to offer you.

Think about this: if that college program really likes you and want you bad enough they should offer you a full scholarship, right?

If a college program is not going to pay for you to get an education and a fully paid education, then you should not play ball for that school. Many major college programs offer Preferred Walk-on opportunities but I believe this a huge gamble for high school student athletes.

There are no guarantees that a student athlete who is a Preferred Walk-on will ever be given an opportunity for a scholarship, to be a starter in that program or even an opportunity to play, period.

Go to a college program where you know you will be given every opportunity to play. Attend a college program that’s going to give you a full athletic scholarship or a very strong financial package to play at that university.

There are many situations where high school athletes have become Preferred Walk-ons and, a year or two later, received a full scholarship and became a full-time starter. Also, there are situations where athletes never receive a scholarship, paid their own way for their entire athletic career at that university and were never given a chance to play. That’s a huge risk!

It becomes a scam when you, the high school athlete, end up becoming a practice dummy that’s only there to help the real players get better. It’s a big problem when good high school student athletes are totally used.

Basically, the solution is to go to a program that wants you and is totally committed to you.

Don’t be sorry just don’t make a mistake

High school student athletes are working very hard to achieve success and they don’t want anyone to mess it up for them.

Don’t be sorry for working hard to be the best athlete you are trying to be and for wanting that scholarship just don’t make any mistakes along the way trying to get that scholarship.

The mistake is putting all of your recruiting eggs into one basket, relining too much on your high school coach or just focusing on the big T.V. schools when there are many other college programs out there to choose from don’t get locked into just doing one thing when it comes to recruiting try other methods to get your name out there to a huge list of college programs.

Don’t make any mistakes in the college recruiting process and make sure you know who that coach is who is recruiting you find out as much as you can about that coach.

Don’t be sorry for not keeping you’re grades up or taking the SAT over and over again until you have an unstoppable score.

Once the process of getting recruited for college is in motion make sure you know what you’re doing just don’t take anyone’s word on the process  make sure you know the process because if you screw it up you may not get a second chance.

How many times have you heard someone say “if I only knew” or “I wish we would have started earlier?”  These are all mistakes that you will surely be sorry for!

End the end of it all, recruiting that is you can never really be sure what to do just work vary hard at everything, so you can never say I’m sorry or here some coach say I’m sorry to you.

All I saying to you is being recruiting for college is not easy so don’t make any mistakes.

The privilege of high school athletics

I came across this interesting article about high school athletes in many school districts across this country having to pay to play their sport.

I think it’s unfortunate that student athletes have to raise money to play their sport but this is how it is these days.

In my opinion, every high school athlete should be given the opportunity to try out for any particular sport that they’re interested in.

It should be the right for every kid in high school to try out for the team; that’s kind of what high school, in some ways, is all about, right?

I believe if you make the high school team then it is a privilege because you have done something that many of the other students could not do in terms of making that particular sports team.

What is sad to me is that so many school districts across this country are so screwed up financially. How could they let that happen and why did they let that happen?

Participation in after-school activities has always been the right of student athletes all across this country. Now it seems the glory days of high school sports participation is long gone.

What will happen if this trend of pay to play continues? Sports will only be for the rich where the poor and lower income student athletes will never again have an opportunity to try out for their high school team.

The repercussions of pay to play will be devastating for everyone. Example: if you are an extremely talented high school football athlete but you cannot afford to pay to be a part of the team, this will have a devastating affect on any opportunities for college athletics.

You will not be able to show your athletic talents if you get on the football field therefore, you’re not going to college on scholarship.

If you cannot afford the cost of high school athletics then many student athletes may lose interest in high school all together.

It is a sham that this country can find money to bail out banks and support a ridiculous war but cannot invest this same type of money in the overall educational process of our students in this country.

Pay to play is wrong!!!!!!!
