Three things to watch

1. Chance to be overlooked

The Heat have lost 4-of-6. Players are pointing fingers at Erik Spoelstra. Imagine the chaos surrounding the Pistons this year, and magnify it by the gigantic media microscope following the Heat. Add LeBron’s homecoming in Cleveland tomorrow, and there’s a chance the Heat look past this game.

On the other hand, Miami has feasted on bad teams, and the Pistons are certainly one of those. The Heat are 1-6 against the Celtics, Magic, Hornets, Jazz and Mavericks. That makes them 9-2 against everyone else.

2. Pistons’ pick-and-roll defense

The Heat have relied on a pick-and-roll-based offense, maybe too much. But it might pay off tonight.

The Pistons are 21st in the league in defending the pick-and-roll when the ball handler keeps it and 26th when he doesn’t, according to Synergy.

The only other category of defense they ranked lower in is transition.

3. Pistons’ offensive rebounding

Without Jonas Jerebko, the Pistons’ offensive rebounding has dropped off considerably. Without Udonis Haslem, the Heat’s defensive rebounding has dropped off considerably. Something has to give.

Tonight is a great opportunity for Jason Maxiell to pound the offensive glass, create a couple putbacks and prove his worth.

In his criticism of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade playing together with Miami Heat, Tracy McGrady rebukes Joe Dumars’ positional philosophy

In case you haven’t heard, Tracy McGrady doesn’t think LeBron James and Dwyane Wade complement each other. Via Keith Langlois of Pistons.com:

“It’s what I expected,” McGrady said. “You’ve got two guys who really don’t mix. They’re the same type of player. If you look at Boston’s big three, they’re traditional guys. You’ve got a true shooting guard, you have a true small forward and you have a true power forward. You have a shooting guard (Ray Allen) that doesn’t need the ball. In their case, both of their guys need the ball. They’re not great outside shooters, so they just can’t stand out there and wait for one to pass the ball and knock down open shots.

“That’s not their game. They have to have the ball to make plays and catch a rhythm that way. I’m the same way. I’m not the type of player who can stand on the perimeter and wait for somebody to pass me the ball and knock down jumpers. That’s just how it is. They just don’t complement each other.”

McGrady certainly isn’t the first person to criticize the Heat stars this season, and it’s certainly a reasonable opinion. I still think LeBron and Wade are versatile enough to play well together. Just because they haven’t so far doesn’t mean they can’t.

But what I found most interesting is McGrady’s comments pretty much contradict what Joe Dumars told Langlois before last season:

If you look around the league and look at rosters, the more you can have versatile guys on your roster, the better off you are. Less and less now, you find guys pigeon-holed into one position.

It’s nice to have guys who can play multiple positions, but I’m mostly with McGrady on this. You need players who a good at certain and things and other players who are good at others. Everyone doing everything is difficult to pull off, evident by this year’s Pistons.

The Craziest Lawsuit Against Carmelo Anthony And Dwyane Wade You Will See All Day

Apparent crazy person and prison inmate Johnathan Lee Riches has filed a preliminary injunction and temporary restraining order against Carmelo Anthony, Dwyane Wade, Jerry Reinsdorf, Mark Cuban, Jerry Buss, and the Easter Bunny (I only made up one of those).

This isn’t the only time Riches has filed for zany legal action: according to his Wikipedia page, he’s sued everyone from Michael Vick to former president George W. Bush.

Any writeup will do the pure batshittedness of this thing an injustice, so I urge you to read it for yourself. For the sake of summation, however, the main target in this particular lawsuit is Anthony, who Riches claims he had a sexual relationship with in 2000, and is now afraid wants to “murder” him. He also is apparently going to write a tell-all book about him as well. Hope he has a good proofreader.

As Riches goes on in the suit, which was most likely furiously scribbled on looseleaf in the back of a prison library, it seems he was also wronged by Reinsdorf, Cuban, and Buss:

“Mark Cuban stole my credit cards and tried to buy the Texas Rangers with my money.  Mark Cuban assaulted me serving ice cream at Dairy Queen.  Nolan Ryan threw 100 mph fastballs at my head and he and Robin Ventura beat me up at the Church of Jesus Christ.”

Must have missed that one on SportsCenter.
