Many charges against Pearl in termination letter
As Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News points out, the letter Tennessee sent Bruce Pearl informing the basketball coach his contract has been terminated, lists several charges of violations, etc., over the past three years.
But not to worry, Pearl is getting a new contract.
And, according to DeCourcy, Mike Hamilton and the administration added to the deception.
An excerpt:
As a means of supporting that declaration, the letter – obtained by Knoxville’s WBIR-TV – presents a series of episodes from Pearl’s previous three years of employment that involve allegations of NCAA rules violations, coercion, false statements and other apparent misdeeds that are summarized by the assertion Pearl “engaged in gross misconduct, including dishonesty and other acts involving intolerable behavior.”
And then, the next day, the man who signed this letter (Michael E. Hamilton, Director of Men’s Athletics), another who received a CC (Dr. Jimmy G. Cheek, Chancellor) and the one who was its recipient (Bruce Pearl, Head Coach, Men’s Basketball) sat at a news conference in Knoxville and engaged in what might be described as gross misconduct, including dishonesty and other acts involving intolerable behavior.
All of them.
In other words, Tennessee privately told Pearl one thing, then told the public something else.
Among the charges against Pearl in the letter:
- That in September 2008 Pearl “knowingly violated NCAA rules by hosting, at your house during a team cookout, three prospective student-athletes making unofficial visits and their families. At your house, you admitted to the unofficial visitors and their families that their presence at your house was a violation of NCAA rules. You also told the unofficial visitors and their families that you were not going to tell anyone about the NCAA rules violation, and you asked that they not tell anyone, either.”
Did MLB Team Know About New Pitcher’s Rape And Sodomy Charges?
When the Seattle Mariners acquired Josh Leuke in the Cliff Lee deal, they thought they were getting an exciting young pitcher with a wicked fastball. What they may or may not have known was that they were acquiring a young pitcher with rape and sodomy charges, too.
From the Seattle Times:
Mariners executives insisted they knew nothing before the July 9 trade about the 25-year-old minor-leaguer facing felony charges in a rape and sodomy case in which he later pleaded no contest to a lesser charge. However, new information appears to contradict the Mariners’ original version of events.
That new information? Rick Adair, the Mariners’ former pitching coach, said he told the team about Leuke’s pending charges before the deal was completed. The Rangers, who dealt Leauke to Seattle, say they made an offer the night of the deal to take Leuke back.
According to court documents, Leuke “lied multiple times to police” during the investigation of a possible sexual assault against a 22-year-old woman in a California apartment that Leuke shared with teammates.
The Mariners, for their part, say the Rangers are lying. The Rangers, predictably, are saying the same thing about the Mariners.
[Mariners general manager Jack] Zduriencik said he was told there had been an incident at a bar involving the woman and a third party and that Lueke had been “acquitted.” “So, at that point, we took their word for it,” said Zduriencik, who was interviewed alongside Armstrong last week.
[...]
Daniels acknowledged mistakenly using the word “acquitted,” but disputed the Mariners’ version as having “significant factual inaccuracies.”
One of these teams is lying, and it would be particular embarrassing if it turned out to be the Mariners: they’ve backed a number of initiatives in the Seattle area that take a stand against sexual abuse.
Breaking: Roger Clemens Pleads Not Guilty To Perjury Charges
Roger Clemens sure isn’t going down easy. Today at his arraignment, he pleaded not guilty to charges he lied to Congress about past steroid use. It’s not a surprise move, but it is a continuation of what many believe is a fool’s errand.
Clemens is adamant about his innocence, even if most seem to think the end result of the charges against Clemens will be this. Still, some people are standing by him, and Clemens has thanked them accordingly.
Count us among those who will think this won’t end well for Clemens. He says he’s innocent, maybe he truly believes in his heart of hearts he’s innocent – but the government sure seems to think he’s not.
Some think Clemens’ fight against the charges is about vanity. Maybe they’re right – it’s certainly plausible that he simply can’t stomach the thought of losing, no matter what form it’s in. Either way, his consistent claims of innocence meant there was only one plea for Clemens to make today. Time will tell if it’s the right one. We have our doubts.

Jordan Remy’s “Persistency” Lands Him Indecent Assault Charges
This has been a big week for sports jerks: first Rob Dibble, then Roger Clemens, and now Jordan Remy.
Remy, the son of Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy, was charged with indecent assault and battery after groping a woman at a South Boston sports bar.
Remy, who apparently believes in the old adage “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again,” approached the 34-year-old woman not once, but twice after she blew him off. He’s nothing if not persistent. After the woman called the cops, Remy then decided it was totally cool to be mouthy with the police. Don’t those cops realize they hindered his game?
Police say Remy, who lives with his younger sister on Ross Place in South Boston, appeared intoxicated and agitated and said, “What do you want? . . . Why are you bothering me? I’m just walking home.’
This isn’t the first time Remy has had a run-in with the law. He was arrested 11 years ago on a charge of being a minor in possession of alcohol, but the case was dismissed in Waltham District Court. After all, his dad is the Red Sox broadcaster.
Remy, who was released on $ 2,500 bail, has a hearing scheduled for October 14th. No word on the whereabouts of his pride or ego; both are presumed dead.
The Red Sox and NESN have both declined to comment.
