Boxing Announcer & Comedian Benny Ricardo’s Ideas for Boxing in 2011

Former NFL placekicker Benny Ricardo is a man of many talents. In addition to being a stand-up comic who will play two sold-out shows New Year’s Eve in San Diego, Benny is a veteran boxing analyst on television, often teaming with Hall of Fame blow-by-blow announcer Col. Bob Sheridan. Here’s a unique look at Ricardo’s comedic ideas about how to improve boxing in 2011:

Jabs from Jonas: The Ups and Downs of 2010 in Boxing, and My Own Journey

Often when a year is in its final days, people take time for reflection on the prior 12 months and strategize on improving for the next 12. But if you look back at where you were at its start and what has happened since, you’re nowhere even close. It is the evolution of time and the evolution of you. When every day is a new challenge, to steal a boxing analogy, it is those that can counter punch with the struggles and have the best chin, that ultimately make it.

2010 Boxing Robbery of the Year

Worst Decision in Boxing 2010
Boxing always has bad results. That’s just the name of the game, and it’s why they say to leave it out of the judges’ hands. In recent years, most fans have been too quick to yell “ROBBERY!!” just because a fight was close and didn’t go to the fighter they thought should have won. A fight that is close enough to be won by one or two rounds by one fighter could usually be won by the other with a slight change of perspective. Still, sometimes …

2010 Boxing Comeback of the Year

2010 Comeback of the Year in Boxing:
Pongsaklek Wonjongkam is the winner of ProBoxing-Fans.com’s Comeback of the Year award for 2010. His distinction is based on his unlikely reclaiming of the World Flyweight Title—a crown he first won in 2001. After making 17 defenses, he lost his laurels to Daisuke Naito in 2007. After failing to win the title back in a 2008 rematch, it seemed safe to assume that Pongsaklek’s days were behind him.
After all, he had previously beaten Naito twice—once by a 34-second knockout. Struggling mightily with an opponent …

Bronx’s Famous Morris Park Boxing Club Re-Opening Monday Dec 20th

Almost one year ago to the day, the Bronx’s famous Moris Park Boxing Club, suffered a devastating fire that completely destroyed the entire gym and left nearly 100 Bronx youths without a place to train.  Thankfully, after a lot of hard work, and some generous donations from Joe DeGuardia, CEO of Star Boxing, and a significant donation of equipment made by Everlast, the gym has re-opened and is busier than ever, with many of the amateur fighters from the gym now gearing up for the 2011 NY Golden Gloves.

2010 Boxing Champion of the Year

Who Was the Best Champion in Boxing for the Whole Year?

Proboxing-fans.com’s “Champion of the Year” award is hard laurel to earn. Winning big fights simply isn’t enough to qualify. To even be considered for 2010 Champion of the Year, a boxer must have held onto a major organization title for all 365 days of the past year, a feat which disqualifies almost half the reigning champions straight off the bat. The award is meant to recognize the most meritorious reign of 2010 and reward the achievement of the man who did the most with the gold wrapped around his waist. In 2010, that man was Fernando Montiel.

The Best Champ of 2010

The 5’4″, 31 year old Mexican had enjoyed a superlative reign as WBO Super Flyweight Champion, but until this year there was little to suggest he would blossom as a bantamweight. His 2006 step up in weight resulted in a Split Decision loss. When he finally won a 118 lbs title last year, it was only the interim version and 2009 turned out to be a boring year for Montiel, with only two fights in total and one of those a Technical Draw. So Fernando Montiel should be considered a true dark horse winner of the Champion of the Year award.

He started the year with a 1st Round knockout of undefeated Ciso Morales, confirming his grip on the WBO’s belt. In April came a unification bout with the previous Proboxing-fans.com Champion of the Year, Hozumi Hasegawa. Montiel’s hard-hitting left hook hurt the long-reigning Hasegawa, and the Mexican ably followed up to stop the veteran Japanese warrior. He then defended both belts in July. Fernando Montiel therefore ended the year as the WBC-WBO champion with three title defenses, having taken out an established champ along the way.

Montiel will open 2011 by defending his championship against the talented Nonito Donaire.
