Nike Unveils The New Pro Combat Uniforms for Oregon, Boise State, Florida

Looks like Christmas came early for college football fans, especially those who follow Oregon, Boise State and Florida, because Nike unveiled the team’s new Pro Combat uniforms that they will be wearing in their respective bowl games.

And I have to say, they are…underwhelming.  Seriously, other than the pretty boss pattern on the undershirts, the new uni’s get a great big meh from me.

Judge for yourself…

Boise State will sport these on December 22 in the Las Vegas Bowl.  Props on the shoes.

Florida will wear this yawn-inducing number on January 1 in the Champs Sports Bowl.  I doubt even Tim Tebow could have made this outfit interesting.

DING!  DING!  DING!  We have a winner!  Now this is more like it.  Sure the jersey and pants aren’t all that hot, but check out those socks/shoes.  It’s like someone took a radioactive piss all over the Oregon player’s legs and feet.  Of course these are the Ducks we’re talking about, a team that is no stranger to hideous uniforms.  Thanks to these ensembles, the BCS National Championship game, if not exciting, will at least be iridescent.

Open letter to Boise State: Bring chaos to the BCS

Americans simply want a meritocracy where the best survive and the weak do not.  The Boise State Broncos embody that spirit as one of the winningest programs in college football while not being one of the economic power elite.

Boise State Bronco

Fantasy College Blitz, and all who root for underdogs, carry the flag for Boise State in 2010 (Icon SMI)

So, do us a favor and throttle Nevada on Friday Night. Disarm the Wolfpack pistol. Make a burger out of the Turbo Ostrich Colin Kaepernick.

Coach Chris Petersen- you likely know this, but we who seek chaos in college football’s existing regime salute you. Be the successful outsider whose wins based on talent and heart, not on connections and money. We want the Broncos to be an agent of chaos.

While Top 25 ranked Nevada is the underdog in this week’s de facto WAC Championship game, Boise is this nation’s choice of underdog to root for.

Obi Chris Kenobi, you are our only hope.

Here are the Top 5 reasons why the nation should root for you, Boise, Friday Night:

Merit - Boise State stands undefeated and has our second ranked defense in the country. On offense, the Broncos hold the second spot in yards per play at 7.5 and fourth in yards per game, top 20 in rushing offense and second in points per game at 47.9.

Best candidate for the job - Some might question if Boise State still deserves the underdog moniker as they are the winningest team of the past decade and continually beat Big Time Conference foes head-to-head. TCU shares the same gray status, but in 2010 Boise is the logical choice to bust the BCS and get to the title game because of…

Perception/Style Points advantage – TCU has no more bullets in their gun – their streak of shutouts ended with San Diego State’s second-half barrage. Plus, this week’s battle with New Mexico is a no-win situation as the line is too fine between scoring style points for the voters and inappropriate bullying of a weakling. Boise strength of schedule is marginally stronger, but “barbelled” with the tough opener and Top 25 teams on the backend just in time to make their last pitch to jump into the Top 2. Psychological “recency bias” favors the Broncos.

Auburn on the edge - Auburn has the BCS computer love support, less so among the voters. One little crack in the investigative journalism or rumor mongering machine may be enough to push the Tigers down a bit. One big crack and a loss to Alabama in Friday afternoon’s Iron Bowl would be the fuel that ignites Boise States climb to Number Two, regardless of their win over an above-average South Carolina in the SEC Championship Game.

Oregon Ducks should continue to fly – given minor computer support but heavy doses of human appreciation (big scores, shiny uniforms, Heisman candidate), we have to expect they will finish undefeated and are a lock for the BCS title game.

To wrap it up, college football nation, at least the Tea Party like faction that wants the way a champion is crowned to change, has your back. Take out Nevada and it will be hard to deny you a title shot.

Boise State – good for college football, and good for America.

Over 9,000 Boise State Fans Supporting Kyle Brotzman in Facebook Group

My old colleague at Sporting News Radio, Tim Brando, used to say that the best thing about college football is the fans, and the worst thing about college football is also the fans. Never has there been a better example of that maxim than the treatment of Kyle Brotzman. Brotzman is Boise State’s kicker who [...]

Boise State Misses Last-Second Field Goal, Loses First Game Since 2008 (Video)

So much for the talk of Boise State possibly getting a shot at the national title. After building a 24-7 halftime lead last night against Nevada, the Broncos let it slip away – only to get a chance to win in the waning seconds of regulation after a 54-yard completion from quarterback Kellen Moore to receiver Titus Young. Boise kicker Kyle Brotzman lined up for a chip shot 26-yard field goal…and (barely) missed.

This would have been more than enough to make it a miserable night for Brotzman…but in overtime, it got even worse when he missed another short field goal, this one from 29 yards. On Nevada’s possession, kicker Anthony Martinez nailed a 33-yard field goal – of course, had Brotzman made his kick, that would have led to a second overtime. Instead, it gave Nevada the win, fans stormed the field, and Brotzman comes away with one of the toughest individual nights we’ve seen in a while.

The game also ended some pretty amazing streaks on Boise’s part. They hadn’t lost a game of any kind since 2008 – a 24-game streak – and their last two losses are by a combined four points. Boise also hadn’t lost a regular-season game since 2007, a streak that spanned 35 contests. No matter what conference you play in, that’s an impressive number.

But last night was Nevada’s night. As someone in the pro-Boise camp, I would have liked to see their national title hopes stay alive, but coming back from 17 down, Nevada had to earn this one, and they did. And hey, we’re one game each away from either an Auburn-Oregon matchup for the crpwn – an intriguing game in its own right – or an absolute mess that will only intensify the already-endless BCS scrutiny. Really, we can’t lose…unless we’re Boise State fans, because that was one crushing loss.

Cathleen Allison – AP

Well, at least one pack of ass clowns wearing orange and blue went down today. Boise State just pissed away a big lead and lost in overtime to Nevada after the Boise kicker missed two chip-shot field goals, one to win the game in regulation and the other to open the first overtime period. I guess you just don’t walk into, ah, who the hell am I kidding, I don’t know where Nevada plays even though the girl just told me five minutes ago.

Anyway, Boise totally deserves to be in the national championship game, and why hasn’t Kellen Moore gotten more Heisman Trophy buzz? Look, they beat Virginia Tech Virginia Tech!!! Perennial ACC powerhouse — and they’ve been beating everybody in the WAC by like 50 points a game. Why can’t you people respect the sheer awesomeness of this team? This is an even bigger snub than when Marshall didn’t get to play FSU in 1999.

But seriously, though, make sure you rush out and buy Dan Wetzel’s “Death to the BCS” about how pure greed and elitist power-brokers are keeping deserving teams like Boise from earning their rightful place in the national championship game. Hey, you’ve gotta wipe your ass with something, and unfortunately I’m betting there is a toilet paper shortage in the state of Alabama right now.

Roll ‘Bama Roll

Video: Did Boise St. Actually Miss Late Field Goal?

I was very dubious when the initial call was made at the end of regulation thanks to Nevada’s patented 1983 Southwest Conference Tony Franklin-brand uprights.

Boise State kicker Kyle Brotzman Video Missed Field Goal

But after examining the closeup video in slow motion several times, it appears Boise State kicker Kyle Brotzman pushed the 26-yard field goal attempt to his right.
