Are White People Losing Interest In The NBA Because None Of Its Superstars Look Like Them?

In a column published on the Daily Beast, acclaimed author and Vanity Fair contributing editor Buzz Bissinger makes the argument that the NBA is losing white fans because it has no white superstars. He points to a lack of identifying with the game’s best players, and the purveying attitude “nationwide” that black athletes simply don’t have to try as hard to be good at basketball, as the two main reasons for declining white interest.

It boils down to this: Are whites losing interest in a game in which the number of white American players not only continues to dwindle, but no longer features a superstar?

Yes.

It’s an argument that has been rehashed thousands of times: white people like cheering for white players, and since the NBA’s best players are black, whites care less about the NBA. And, despite the fact that All Star Saturday Night had the most viewers it’s ever had (I’m assuming some of those viewers were white people), Bissinger is right on some level. I’d venture to guess that white NBA fanship, for the last 10 or so years, has probably declined.

But that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The NBA is in the midst of its most exciting season in years, thanks in large part to LeBron James‘ decision to go to the Miami Heat, the continued relevance of some major market teams (the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics), and the sudden relevance of some others (the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls). When the TV ratings for the All-Star game come in, in fact, I bet that it will have garnered the highest level of viewership it’s gotten in 10 years.

Also, people in China apparently love pro basketball. And there are a lot of people there.

There is nothing wrong with Bissinger’s argument; nothing that he says in his article is incorrect, despite that fact that it might be tough for some people to acknowledge. But what is wrong is the notion that the NBA needs white people to like it, because it doesn’t. The NBA will always be culturally relevant, regardless of white flight.

WATCH: Does Brett Favre Get A Pass Because He’s White?

Brett Favre gets away with a lot. From skipping training camp, to having his own private locker room, to sending pictures of little #4 to sideline reporters, The Gunslinger is afforded a certain amount of breathing room by the media. But is he given a pass because he’s white?

Jason Whitlock recently proclaimed that “Brett Favre is football’s Charles Barkley,” and that there was no double-standard for the quarterback. ESPN’s Rob Parker disagrees.

Parker and Skip Bayless debated the topic on “First Take” this morning, and for those of you who shudder at the thought of a racially-charged debate featuring Bayless, you can breathe (somewhat) easily: the conversation was actually quite gripping, as the show ventured into some surprisingly brave territory.

Among the questions discussed: whether Favre is seen by some sort of “savior” by white people in a league that is 72% black, whether his good old boy image hits a nerve with some black people, and whether a black quarterback would ever be afforded the same special treatment that Favre gets.

Morning Links: Jim Leyland Is Mad Because He’s Not Going Anywhere (Video)

While you were sleeping, SportsGrid was up all night watching TV and searching the internet for links to help get your day started. Today: have you ever wondered what a manager says to an umpire during an ejection? Also: Batman.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland is “embarrassed” after microphones behind home plate picked up some foul language and general whininess after Miguel Cabrera was hit by a pitch.

“They’re going to the fuckin’ playoffs, and I’m not goin’ anywhere!” Leyland could be heard shouting. Home plate umpire Eric Cooper later compromised and took Leyland for pizza, because everyone knows he tried weally, weally hard to make it to the postseason.

In a darker, more steroidey corner of the baseball world, country singer Mindy McCready, who had an affair with Roger Clemens, wants everyone to know she feels sorry for the Rocket.

A Uruguayan goalkeeper wore a Batman logo on his jersey during a match, and probably gave Chad Ochocinco an idea.

Wes Welker caught two passes in his first action since esploding his knee last season, and said he feels good. You might take away the structural integrity of his knee, but you’ll never take away his grittiness.
