NFL Picks: Cincinnati Bengals at Baltimore Ravens
The Baltimore Ravens will look to avenge a week 2 loss when they host the Cincinnati Bengals this Sunday. The Ravens have already locked themselves into the postseason, but a win this week and a Steelers loss at Cleveland would give Baltimore the No.2 seed and a first round bye. The Bengals haven’t seem to [...]

Ravens (8-4) vs Texans (5-7) Preview
Baltimore receiver Derrick Mason believes that given the talent on the Ravens offense, they should be much better than they’ve demonstrated the last two weeks.
After falling out of first place in the AFC North last weekend, the Ravens could have an easier time Monday night when they travel to face the Houston Texans.
Baltimore (8-4) lost control of its own fate in the division after a 13-10 loss to rival Pittsburgh last Sunday.
The Texans are coming off a 34-27 loss at Philadelphia last Thursday. Houston, which led 24-20 going into the fourth quarter, allowed 416 yards in the game, including 301 passing.
Baltimore has won all three meetings against Houston, including 41-13 in 2008. (Source Preview: ESPN)

GAME RECAP
Josh Wilson intercepted Matt Schaub’s pass and returned it 12 yards for a touchdown in overtime lifting the Baltimore Ravens to a 34-28 win over the Houston Texans on Monday night.
The Ravens (9-4) stayed one game behind Pittsburgh in the AFC North despite blowing a 28-7 lead in the second half. Schaub threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Andre Johnson and a 2-point conversion to Jacoby Jones with 21 seconds left in regulation to cap the unlikely rally.
Baltimore lost fourth-quarter leads in each of its four losses and had to punt after its only offensive series of overtime.
Houston started from its 12, and Schaub was trying to connect with Jones on second down when Wilson picked it off and ran into the end zone.
Houston (5-8) has lost six of its last seven. (Source)
NFL Picks: Baltimore Ravens at Houston Texans
This Monday the Baltimore Ravens will look to move one step closer to securing a spot in the postseason when they go on the road to take on the Houston Texans. Baltimore comes into the game off a disappointing 13-10 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers last week, and now are a game back in the division and must fight for one of two wild card spots. The Texans looked like they were ready to turn the corner after their come from behind win over the Kansas City Chiefs back in week 6, but the Texans have went just 1-5 since their bye, and likely need to win out to have a shot at winning the AFC South. Oddsmakers don’t seem to think that will be the case, as the current NFL odds have the Ravens favored by 3-points over the Texans.

Baltimore (8-4): The Ravens offense has struggled to get going the past couple weeks, scoring just 27 points, but had they just ran the ball and punted last week against Pittsburgh they likely would have won both games. Baltimore’s offense should have no trouble getting it going this week, as they take on a Texans defense that has been torched for at least 29 points in seven of their last eight games.
Quarterback Joe Flacco completed 17 of 33 for 266 yards and a touchdown against a very good Steelers defense last week, and now goes up against the worst pass defense in the NFL. Houston comes into the game allowing 287 yards a game through the air, and with the way Baltimore can run the ball with Ray Rice, Flacco should be able to pick apart the Texans secondary.
Houston (5-7): It’s not as if the Texans are playing bad football right now, as they haven’t lost a game by more than 13 points during their 1-5 stretch. The Texans are killed by their defenses inability to shut the other team down late in games. Last week the Texans took a 24-20 lead heading into the fourth quarter, but the defense allowed Philadelphia to score two touchdowns and take home the win.
Offensively the Texans are very balanced with both the pass and the run, and have the ability to score on any defense. Arian Foster leads the NFL with 1,230 yards rushing, while Matt Schaub has thrown for 3,089 yards with 17 touchdowns to just eight interceptions. The Texans also have one of the best wide receivers in the game in Andre Johnson, who is fourth in the NFL with 1,018 yards. The Texans offense will be put to the test in this one, as the Ravens bring in the 6th best rushing attack (97.8 ypg) and the 1th ranked pass defense (208 ypg).
Looking at the Odds: In my opinion this game is a complete mismatch. The Ravens come in desperately needing a a win, after their loss to the Steelers, and while the Texans need to win as well, this team can’t have much confidence left after what has happened them lately. The Texans defense wont be able to keep the Ravens off the scoreboard, while the Ravens defense will be able to slow down the Texans offense. My final score prediction is Baltimore 34, Houston 27.

Baltimore Books: Do the math–when is it worth it to buy an ereader?
I love ebooks but have yet to buy an ereader. I read them on my old Palm Z22, as I’ve noted before. Starting at $ 139 for a Kindle and $ 149 for a Nook (forget about the Sony Reader at $ 179), most people would have to buy far too many books to break even on a purchase in the first year. Here’s the equation:
cost of ebooks x number of books bought + Cost of reader=cost of paper books x number of books bought
Let $ 144=cost of the ereader, which is an average of the Kindle and Nook
Let x=number of books bought
9.99 is the general price of an ebook available in paperback
11.99 is the general price of an ebook only available in hardcover
14.99 is a typical price of a hard copy paperback (I picked a high price to give the ereaders an advantage and make my point stronger)
24.99 is a typical price for a hard copy hardcover
For paperbacks:
9.99x + 144=14.99x
144=5x
x=29 (rounded up because a reader can’t buy part of a book)
So a reader would have to buy 29 hefty paperbacks (smaller paperbacks are cheaper) to make an ereader worth it in its first year of use.
For hardcovers:
11.99x + 144=24.99x
144=13x
x=11 (actually just over 11, so it should be 12, but I’m trying to give the ereaders the benefit of the doubt)
So a reader would have to buy 11 first-run hardcovers a year to make an ereader worth it in the first year. That’s a lot of first-run books. Most avid readers read a combination of hardcovers and paperbacks. They also receive books from friends and libraries.
I didn’t include magazines and newspapers in my calculations because they make an ereader truly not worth it financially, as they’re cheap, though it’s a nice bonus.
An ereader could be a worthwhile investment if you use it for 2 or more years, but I’m still skeptical. Technology outdates notoriously quickly, so I wouldn’t expect an ereader to last more than two years. Also, why carry around another electronic device? I’m all for ebooks–on the devices we already use: Androids, Blackberries, iPhones, and Palms, to name a few. Yes, the screen is small, but how many sentences does a reader read at once?
Of course, there are those who just have to have a new gadget, and I fully sympathize. Buy a new ereader. Buy a color Nook. But don’t try to tell yourself it will end up saving you money.
Baltimore Books: Hooray for Google!
I love the new ebookstore! I love it! Books are available for multiple platforms, including multiuse devices, such as iPhones and Androids AND the Nook and Sony Reader, and they sell through independents, too (click here, but Baltimore, where are you?). Yay! Can’t wait to try them!
I disagree with Christopher Dawson at ZDNet; I think this does spell the end, or the gigantic slowing, of the Kindle.
