The dream is over for many high school student athletes

There are a large number of high school student athletes who will not be attending college in the fall.  Many of these student athletes are extremely talented but for poor performance in the classroom or lack of exposure to college programs, these athletes are not going to college.

Lack of preparation is a big reason why many talented players will end up working in a fast food restaurant or some other place because they did not take the time to invest into the college recruiting process.

Some of these athletes will try to correct the problem by attending junior college or  retaking the standardized tests with the hopes of gaining the attention of college coaches.

Student athletes miss out on college; this happens all the time.

The NCAA needs to pay the players

This is so ridiculous that big time college programs can generate billions of dollars in revenue with football bowl games and college basketball tournament games but pay the players nothing.

What’s wrong with sharing some of that money with the players?  If it wasn’t for the players no one would tune in to watch college athletics.  It is an absolute must that the players be paid for their contributions to college athletics.  There’s enough money to incorporate some kind of payment structure for these college ball players.  These athletes are giving up so much and getting so little in return it is not fair and it’s criminal in my opinion.

A college program can practice these players up to 20 hours per week, that’s the equivalent of a part time job but in this situation these kids are not being paid for their services.

Does a college recruiting service help?

Does college recruiting services really help?  This is a serious debatable question because of what college recruiting services can do and cannot do or have trouble doing.  For a long time I ran a college recruiting service where I charged parents a fee for services.  Basically, what my recruiting service did was to sign up student athletes who were not being recruited at all by college coaches.

When you really think about it if these players were being recruited, there would be no need for recruiting services.  In some situations, recruiting services do work and have been a huge benefit to high school student athletes.  Many do believe that recruiting services are a total waste of time and that most parents can do their own recruiting.

There are thousands of individuals out there who all want to be college recruiters but I would bet that most of these individuals have no real understanding of what this business is all about.

College recruiting services can work if they find the right players who are being under-exposed and have the talent to play at a higher level college program.  These high school student athletes do not necessarily have to be totally overlooked to benefit from a college recruiting service.

Do not focus totally on division one programs

Every high school student athlete that I’ve ever talked to wants to play at a major college program whether they have the talent to do so or not.  It’s understandable to want to play your sport at a top level college program.  What student athlete would not want to play their games on television or in front of thousands of cheering fans?

The reality is that it’s a very small percentage of high school athletes across the country that will ever play at a major college program.  The bottom line is for student athletes to graduate from a college with a good education and the strong possibilities of lifetime employment.

I would think the student athletes would rather play their sport in college for the next four years as opposed to sitting the bench at a major college program.  Student athletes should expand their wish lists of college programs out there beyond division one.
