Vinny Castilla Continues to Play

At the age of 43, former Colorado Rockies and Mexican star Vinny Castillo continues to play baseball.

The last time we checked on Castilla he was putting up decent numbers for the Hermosillo Naranjeros.  A year later he’s back and was seen in Hermosillo taking grounders at third base this morning.

Said Castilla, “I am in perfect condition, although I have not seen pitches in almost a year. I am sure with a few days of batting practice and taking grounders I will be ready to debut in the LMP (Mexican Pacific League) on December 7.”

Castilla, who retired from Major League Baseball in 2006, indicated that he did not know when he will say a final goodbye to professional baseball.  He just said that while he is still in good physical condition he will go on playing.  In 30 games last season for Hermosillo, Vinny hit .292 with 7HR and 27 RBI.  If you were to pro-rate those HR #’s over a 162 game season…  you’d have ~ 38HR.  So he’s still got some game left!

Over the course of his Major League career, Castilla connected for 320 homers, 1884 hits and drove in 1105 runs in 16 seasons.

In other news, Hermosillo has really been trolling for the free agents, signing infamous slugger Karim Garcia.

From Baseball Mexico:

The 35-year-old Garcia hit .361 with a homer and 12 RBIs in 15 games for Hermosillo last winter before heading back to Korea, where he is known as the “Latino Bambino.” Garcia has achieved All-Star status in Korea but became disenchanted with the KBO after a seven-game suspension and $ 3,000 fine for arguing with an umpire during a September game, and says he’s considering playing for Monterrey in the Mexican League next year. He hit .374 with 20 homers in 76 games for the Sultanes in 2007.

Selected as The Sporting News Minor League Player of the Year in 1995, Garcia went on to bat .241 with 66 homers and 212 RBIs in 488 major league games between 1995 and 2004 (along with a .286 average for the Yankees in the 2003 World Series) and has played overseas in Japan as well as Korea.

Look out, LMP.  Hermosillo is no joke!

Law & Order: the Tiger Woods Scandal Edition

Considering “Law & Order” is known to adapt real life crimes, changing the plot just enough so it’s considered fiction, it was only a matter of time that the show would take on Tiger Woods’ troubles.

This Wednesday’s episode of “Law & Order: Los Angeles” features a skirt-chasing golf pro and his club-wielding wife. When police arrive to the scene, the injured golfer says his wife was just trying to save him from the swimming pool (instead of a wrecked car). Apparently this golfer didn’t know how to swim and his wife used a club to rescue her husband instead of a life ring and/or hook.

A spokesperson for the series claimed the episode strictly fiction. Of course, it is, technically, but writers have to find their inspiration somewhere. Besides, it’s not like we really know what happened to Tiger on Thanksgiving night.

10 Christmas Gifts With A Fitness Theme

A kettlebell holding a Christmas present.

With just under a month to go till Christmas you probably still have some Christmas shopping left to do.  If you are super organised then you may just need the odd thing or if like me you normally leave buying gifts till the last minute you probably need quite a bit more.  Today I am here to help with 10 Christmas gifts with a fitness theme.  Whether you are buying for a gym junkie or just trying to gently introduce a newbie to the world of fitness, you should be able to find the perfect Christmas fitness gift for them here.

FitDeck Bodyweight Cards.1) FITDECK:- FitDeck is a unique deck of 56 exercise playing cards that can be topped up with 26 card booster decks.  The 56 card decks focus on bodyweight exercises such as yoga, pilates and stretching whilst the 26 card booster decks incorporate exercise equipment such as dumbbells and kettlebells.  Each card has three fitness levels (beginner, intermediate or advanced) making FitDeck an excellent Christmas gift for couch potatoes who are just starting out or hard core gym goers who want to mix up their workout routine.  FitDeck is also really simple to play and can be performed almost anywhere.  You just carry the cards with you and then when you get a spare moment shuffle them, pick one out and perform the exercise shown on the card.

A black gym bag.2) GYM BAG:- Do you have a friend who always loses their keys, iPod or phone in the gym?  Then why not get them a gym bag to keep all their stuff in one place?  Not only will it stop them losing their accessories but it will also make going to the gym much more practical as they can put all their gear in one bag.

A heart rate monitor.3) HEART RATE MONITOR:- Heart rate monitors allow people to measure their heart rate at all times whether they are resting or exercising.  This makes them a great gift for people of all fitness levels who want a simple way to track the impact of their exercise routine.  Heart rate monitors show new starters whether their heart rate is improving as a result of exercise.  They are also compatible with most cardiovascular machines in the gym which is a great feature for any gym regulars.

A 6kg kettlebell.4) KETTLEBELLS:- Kettlebells are cannonball shaped free weights that are similar to dumbbells.  However, unlike dumbbells (which focus on specific body part), kettlebells engage multiple muscle groups (particularly the core muscles) at once.  This makes them a great way to get a full body workout in a relatively short space of time.  Kettlebells are a great fitness gift for someone you are trying to introduce into the world of fitness or a more experienced gym goer who is looking for a new workout to try.

A pedometer.5) PEDOMETER:- Pedometers count the number of steps taken during a specific period and many can also calculate distance covered and calories burned.  They are an excellent way for both new starters and regular gym goers to set themselves fitness targets.  New starters may want to set themselves a target of 1,000 steps a day whilst health concious individuals may use the pedometer to ensure that they burn at least 500 calories a day.

Slendertone System-Abs for Men.6) SLENDERTONE SYSTEM-ABS:- Slendertone System-Abs is an electronic abdominal toning belt that uses clinically proven electronic muscle stimulation (EMS) toning technology to exercise the abdominal muscles.  Whilst Slendertone System-Abs does not burn fat, it does tone and strengthen the abdominal muscles making it a perfect gift for the fitness enthusiast who just needs that final push to get six pack abs.

A black skipping rope.7) SKIPPING ROPE:- Skipping is an old school cardiovascular exercise which can burn up to 750 calories an hour.  Whilst it may not sound like a great gift, skipping ropes have come a long way since they first hit the market.  You can now get skipping ropes which talk to you, skipping ropes which measure the calories burned and more.  Plus, skipping is such a simple exercise that anyone can do it, making the skipping rope a perfect present for people of all fitness levels.

A 3 tiered steamer. 8) STEAMER:- When it comes to Christmas gifts with a fitness theme, exercise is the main focus.  However, healthy eating is just as important as regular exercise.  Steamers cook foods in a way that maintains most of the nutrients.  These nutrients are often lost through other cooking methods such as boiling and frying, making steamers an excellent addition to any kitchen.

A pair of weight lifting gloves.9) WEIGHT LIFTING GLOVES:- Weight lifting gloves are a simple but valuable gym accessory.  They allow the user to get a proper grip on the weights, reduce pressure on the hand and wrists and stop the weights from rubbing against the hand skin.  They are a perfect gift for a regular gym goer who has never got round to buying any gloves.

A Warrior yoga mat.10) YOGA MAT:- Yoga mats allow individuals to exercise within the comfort of their own home.  This exercise does not have to be limited to yoga.  Yoga mats offer a high grip, well cushioned surface that lends itself to stretching, press ups, crunches and more.  So if you have a friend who complains that they cannot afford a gym membership this could be the perfect gift to get them started.

SUMMARY

Christmas is normally a time when you expect fitness to take a back seat.  However, with these fitness themed Christmas gifts you can ensure that you, your family and friends do not completely forget about fitness during the festive period.  So have a browse of the gifts below and finish your Christmas shopping today.

TCU to join Big East Conference

FORT WORTH, Texas — TCU has accepted a bid for full membership to become the 17th member of the Big East Conference, effective July 1, 2012.

“Our membership is genuinely excited to add an institution of the caliber of TCU to our conference,” Big East commissioner John Marinatto said in a statement Monday afternoon. “Chancellor [Victor] Boschini and athletic director Chris Del Conte clearly share the same academic and athletic aspirations of our current members and are similarly committed to sponsoring a very highly competitive athletic program.”

The conference change allows TCU to play in an automatic BCS-qualifying league beginning in the 2012-13 school year. TCU currently plays in the Mountain West Conference, which does not have an automatic bid to the BCS and is going through some changes of its own. BYU and Utah are leaving the conference just as Boise State enters.

TCU, which has an enrollment of 9,142, would become the Big East’s ninth football team. The conference has extended an invitation to Villanova to become its 10th football member.

TCU is 12-0 and ranked No. 3 in the BCS. The Frogs are at the very least headed to the Rose Bowl. But if Auburn or Oregon slip up this weekend, TCU is poised to play for a national title.

The Frogs might not have been headed to a BCS game without Boise State’s loss Friday night in overtime at Nevada. Had the Broncos remained undefeated, there was a distinct possibility that the Broncos could have passed TCU in the BCS standings and been the only non-automatic qualifier school to get into one of the top-level bowls.

According to a MWC spokesperson, TCU will not have to pay an exit fee for leaving the league under conference bylaws. The same applied to Utah (Pac-12) and BYU (independent in football and WCC in all other sports) when both notified the MWC of their intentions to leave for the 2012 season. The only thing TCU had to do was notify the league by Sept. 1 to leave for the 2011-12 season. Since TCU didn’t, the Horned Frogs will leave on July 1, 2012, the same time Nevada and Fresno State enter the Mountain West from the WAC, for the 2012-13 season.
