Gentlemanly Means Pursued: Holiday Buying for the Gentleman in Your Life: Part One

With the holiday shopping season underway, the braintrust at Gentlemanly Means Pursued has been working hard to make it easier to buy for the man in your life. Your boyfriend, husband, lover, father, brother, son, uncle — most everybody’s got one or more of ‘em. And, yeah, they can be difficult creatures. Never fear. We’ve got you covered.

For part one, we offer gifts in the $ 50 and under range:

Field Notes notebooks
$ 9.95 for a 3-pack — available from fieldnotesbrand.com

Field Notes are the perfect everyday notebook. Small enough to fit easily in a pocket, durable enough to stand up to daily wear, but not so precious that you feel bad if you accidentally throw it in the wash or rip the cover. Equal parts stylish and functional.

Every man needs a notebook now and then and at 10 bucks for a pack of three you can’t go wrong. Plus, they’re designed and manufactured right here in the USA.

J.Crew Factory Button-Down Shirt
prices vary, most under $ 50 — available from jcrew.com

There’s a J.Crew factory store down at Arundel Mills and they consistently have a fine selection of button-down shirts at very reasonable prices. I have four of them myself and they’re great. Not too dressy, not too casual, and all kinds of comfortable. I’m sure the quality on the standard J.Crew models is somewhat better, but the value on these can’t be beat. They’d serve a solid function in any man’s wardrobe.

Size-wise, I wear a medium and have found them true to that.

One buying note: the online version of the factory store is theoretically only open from Friday at midnight to Sunday at midnight. I haven’t tested that, but to be safe you might want to order over the weekend.

Opinel Knife
prices vary, most under $ 50 — available from opiknife.com

As I noted in my pocket knife post back in June, there are two things at work here:

One, every man should carry a knife.

Two, Opinels are beautiful and highly functional.

The No. 3 works great in a pocket, while the larger sizes serve larger purposes. No matter which way you go, an Opinel will make a beautiful gift. Dig in and pick one you think your chosen man will like. He will.

CXXVI Sea Rope Bottle Opener
$ 36, available from CXXVI.net

Made in the USA from steel forged by hand on a 130-year old anvil. How often do you get a chance to buy something with that pedigree? Not often enough.

Maybe it sounds crazy to spend $ 36 dollars on a bottle opener. It might even be crazy. But if you consider that what you’re really doing is buying a handmade tool that will literally last a lifetime and then some, it starts to look like a damn fine gift idea. At least to me, and quite possibly to the man in your life as well.

Dogfish Head Beer Soap
$ 5, available from dogfish.com

More of a stocking stuffer than an actual gift, sure, but worthy of inclusion regardless. A perfect way to wash off the detritus of a well-spent day or cleanse the night away in preparation for a new one.

Honorable Mentions:
Some beer to go with that soap, a bottle of Copper Fox rye, an Old Time Sling Shot, or a gift-that-keeps-on-giving subscription to Esquire, GQ, or Playboy.

Have ideas of your own? Let ‘em fly in the comments.

Coming Soon: parts two and three, covering gifts from $ 50-$ 150 and $ 150 and up.

Ron Artest Still Lost in the Triangle

Phil Jackson is well known for his attachment to the Triangle Offense and Ron Artest is becoming famous for being lost in it. For Ron, it might as well be the Bermuda Triangle Offense. Picking up right where he left off in the playoffs, Ron looks as clueless on the court as Erik Spoelstra does on the sideline.

This past Sunday, Ron’s reluctance resurfaced as he gave up an open look in the corner and instead passed up the opportunity to try and tie the game. While that doesn’t illustrate his offensive confusion his declining numbers sure do. Offensively, Ron Ron is at an all-time low. From minutes played to points scored, Artest’s offensive stock is rivaling Bank of America for basement value.

Of course, for what’s expected of Artest, offense is an after thought. His defense has been as good as ever and his trademark intensity is still present as PJ can attest to after Sunday’s loss.

While not a major concern now this is an issue that will certainly become vital later in the season. Despite his dismal struggles, Artest hit his share of clutch buckets last postseason that have landed him in Laker lore. While the results were more than appreciated the heartache wasn’t.

For Ron, his best bet to contribute on offense is with timely shooting and on occasion mixing it up in the post. With so many others capable of putting it in the hoop, Ron Ron simply isn’t needed to help aid in the cause. But on off nights like the one on Sunday it becomes imparitive that Ron finds his rhythm and picks up the slack for the weary legs of Pau Gasol and Lamar Odom.

Nobody is expecting Artest to drop 20 a game but it would be nice to know he can be trusted when his number is called. Even if that number is called as rarely as Sasha Vujacic’s name is by Lawrence Tanter.

None the less, this team is more than happy to have a selfless player willing to forgo glory for the sake of winning. So long as Ron is clutch when it counts all will be forgiven even if that means sitting through many cringe inducing evenings of hoops.

BYU remains undefeated after last-minute gumption at South Padre Island Invitational

So far, Jackson Emery is looking good.

The BYU junior predicted the Cougars wouldn’t lose a game this regular season, and after a couple of close calls at the South Padre Invitational over the weekend, he’s still in the clear.

Brigham Young is now 7-0 after Noah Hartsock and Jimmer Fredette came up clutch in the waning seconds of their team’s game against South Florida and Saint Mary’s.

The Cougs may not even be the Mountain West’s best (hello, San Diego State, I will never ignore you), but they’re already quite exciting. And Jimmer is going to be must-watch all around the country. Heck, his school scheduled a “neutral”-site road game against Vermont in his home town in just a couple of weeks.

Here’s Fredette’s dagger, which came against Saint Mary’s Saturday night in the 74-73 win.

Some good plot lines being written, as BYU will join the West Coast Conference, where Saint Mary’s resides, beginning next season.

Fredette continues to prove his worth, and it’s very possible he’ll prove the AP voters right and wind up on the end-of-the-season All American team.

The night before, Fredette passed up the opportunity to be the hero, opting instead to dish to Hartsock, who coolly sank the baseline 12-footer to down USF.

I’d like to thank the BYU fan with TiVo for getting both of these videos up on YouTube as quickly as possible. Next up for Brigham Young is Creighton on Wednesday, then still-undefeated Hawaii before flying up to New York for Fredette’s Homecoming game.

  • Dwight Howard

Las Vegas projection

Spread: Pistons +11

Over/under: 192.5

Score: Magic win, 101.75-90.75

Three things to watch

1. Tracy McGrady faces old team

Tracy McGrady played the best game of his season against the Knicks on Sunday. Was there extra motivation for him going against a former team? If so, hopefully that manifests again tonight.

2. Will John Kuester change the starting lineup?

Jason Maxiell does not matchup well with Rashard Lewis. I repeat: Jason Maxiell does not matchup well with Rashard Lewis. One more time in case you missed it: Jason Maxiell does not matchup well with Rashard Lewis.

Kuester initially said Maxiell was starting because of matchups. If he starts tonight, it’s because Kuester believes he’s better right now than Austin Daye. There’s no other way to spin it.

I hope Daye or Charlie Villanueva gets the nod. Maxiell, even with his smaller size, would probably be the Pistons’ best match off the bench for Dwight Howard.

3. Magic with the Magic

For years, the Pistons owned the Magic. Detroit had enough savvy big men to defend Dwight Howard one-on-one and still limit his effectiveness. That allowed the Pistons to have a huge upper hand at the other four positions.

As well as the Pistons matched up, they also seemed to have things fall their way against Orlando.

Is there any good karma left? I doubt it. Detroit no longer has the bigs to contain Howard, and luck hasn’t been on the Pistons’ side lately, either.

Lime Green Umbro GT – Go Faster

Lime Umbro GT Pro

Spotted this over on the Umbro Facebook page today, set for release in February is a new Lime Green edition of the Umbro GT Pro. Worn by players such as England and Sunderland striker Darren Bent, the Umbro GT is designed for the fast, quick-thinking soccer player who likes to have the ball at his feet. The Lime Green colorway is pretty bold, but there is something about it that makes the Teijin Japanese Micro Fiber upper look pretty appealing!

Umbro GT Pro Lime Green

The GT Pro is the lightest in the Umbro line and having tested them I can say that they are a very competitive boot in the category of speed. Personally, I really liked the performance I got from the boot as they really suited my game. They break in really easily and are extremely effective on the field. In terms of player position, they suit both winger and forwards who rely on speed and acceleration.

Expect to see these released in the US around March 2011.

ITB’s Slate of Eight: Rivalry Week Y’all

New ITBOn this week’s show we’ve got Bomani Jones, host of The Morning Jones from 7-10et on Sirius Channel 98, on the podcast to talk about our eight favorite rivalry games as we sit here on the holiday week. You may also recognize Jones from ESPN’s First Take, perhaps you’ve seen him on ESPN’s Outside the Lines or more recently on ESPN’s Around The Horn. He’s our guy in the morning folks and you oughta do yourself a favor and check out The Morning Jones.

We take on the rivalry week with a vengeance and since we’re rolling through my eight favorite rivalries we get to run the gammut from teams clawing and scratching for bowl eligibility to a several folks making a stand to get to a BCS bowl. Here’s the Slate:

Texas – Texas A&M
Florida – Florida State
Georgia Tech – Georgia
Sakerlina – Clemson
Ohio State – Michigan
LSU – Arkansas
Oklahoma – Oklahoma State
Alabama – Auburn

As a long time Longhorn fan Bomani gives us his thoughts on Greg Davis, Texas’ struggling to get to bowl eligibility and what this win would mean for an Aggies team that hasn’t had this sort of opportunity often. Florida State has to win this game against the Gators, not just to finish on a solid note but because if the ‘Noles can’t win right now against a Gators squad that’s not very good then when should they expect to over take the Blue and Orange.

Georgia, like Texas, is pushing to get to bowl eligibility and with a “meh” Georgia Tech team coming to Athens I expect AJ Green to have a big day. Sakerlina-Clemson wraps up the ACC-SEC rivalries that are, oddly enough, 3 of the 4 best ACC rivalries. The Palmetto state teams need this win for bragging rights and Clemson needs it to erase the debacle that was last season’s affair. In the Big Ten Ohio State-Michigan takes the stage as Rich Rod basically tries to keep it close while Ohio State looks to stay in BCS bowl contention.

In our big three games we give some quick thoughts on LSU-Arkansas and Bomani talks the issues that come up when trying to understand Les Miles. In the Bedlam Game the Sooners have to figure out their offensive and defensive woes if they hope to stop the machine that is Oklahoma State’s offense. The Pokes are going to run the ball and use Blackmon to stretch the defense, this should be a fun one.

Lastly we wrap the show on Cam Newton, Auburn and the Iron Bowl. Kenny Rogers gets his due. Newton’s Heisman chances get their due. Then we get to the game and talk about Greg McElroy’s short comings this season, what Bama is really playing for and how the Tigers are going to respond with the pressure turned up around them. Oregon, TCU and Boise State are likely rooting for the Crimson Tide as Auburn and Newton are not the beast anyone wants to take on in the BCS Title game. Meanwhile the Orange Bowl has got to be thinking Tide as well because with Auburn in the Sugar Bowl LSU and Alabama will be available in the at-large pool to pick from.
